Engine Mods

Has anyone installed intakes or down pipes on their X3/X4 M40i yet? Looking to let the engine at least breathe a little better while they're working on cracking this new DME.

Welcome! High flow cats are probably the best upgrade I've done yet lol. Check out CTS turbo - great fitment and quality. I don't believe we have any intake options for our 2021 yet unfortunately.

Did you have to do any kind of tuning to prevent a CEL after you installed the CTS high-flow cat?

Nope! No tuning even available yet for 2021s. It's been almost a month since installation, and no CEL yet. I always have it on sport mode and drive it pretty aggressively daily but surprisingly so far so good!

Awesome! Thanks! How difficult was the install? I'm pretty mechanically savvy but this thing only has 300 miles on it so I'm a little terrified lol

Have you installed the CP from BM3 as well?

Regarding the intake, here's what I found...

https://x-ph.com/mst-bmw-x3-x4-3-0t-...intake-system/

It says it will fit 2018+ X3 X4 3.0T B58 but I will call to confirm. Let me know what you guys think.

intakes do nothing for these motors. save your money and get a better drop in filter for the stock airbox

2021 X4m40i tuned with JB4 since no flash tunes available. I have a VRSF Catless down pipe with a straight mid pipe to an RPI exhaust. I am running the JB4 on map 4 with 101 octane. Approximately 500hp... need to dyno soon

Awesome! I had a JB4 on my 2007 335i e92 when that was all that was available at the time too. Thought it was the greatest thing until MHD came out and exposed what a box of gremlins that thing is. I'm glad you're having good results with it but I'd never put that thing on this car. I think BM3 is real close to cracking the DME based on my comms with them so I'm cool with waiting. Plus I'm not even
sure how mod crazy I'm going to get with this since I still have my 650whp/625wtq e92 to act stupid in.

What site did you get the DP from?

Fortunately the down pipe was from my 340i and they are the same across the B58 lineup. I think awhile back from X-ph.com. I spoke with my flash tuner and right now - no one is close to getting the DME unlocked for 7/2020 and on build dates. Personally, I don’t like the JB4 either...

Nice. Are you running an upgraded CP, if so, which one?

I had my local shop install it in 30 minutes. They mentioned no issues during install. I got the impression our stock charge pipes were pretty sturdy so I haven't changed those.

Put a CAI on my 2020 X4 last week.
Got a MST brand as has a closed box preventing heat soak.
Sounds good.
If you get one make sure you tell them it’s 2021 and not 2019...there is a different design unit needed.

Next year I’ll do catted down pipe, charge pipe and tune.

Is an aftermarket intake even worth it? The oem stuff sucks cold air in already. It's not like 10+ years ago. I'd imagine a simple higher flow insert is all we would need for power gains, no?

I noticed you said "dry filter" specifically? I take it the usual K&N pre-oiled filters do not play well with these engines?

The intake won't heat soak unless you're in a stand still or stop and go traffic. You're also losing power by adding the cover on the filter. I've already datalogged the temps on my intake system and they drop after 2 minutes of driving. I also dyno'd my system with a similar cover over the intake and we saw a significant loss in power. Run it without the cover and watch your IAT with the torque app.
