Garage List
It was noted during a vehicle inspection X3 30e that both left and right had split.
The dealer is offering to replace under warranty.
Car is 3 years old and has only covered 10500 miles.
I intend keeping the car for a while and ask is this a common fault ?

It's not uncommon for them to split. I suspect the age had more of a factor than the miles.
At 3 years that's not too old but good to know and better to have an issue under warranty I guess?

If you're already out of warranty I probably wouldn't bother with dust boots until you're replacing the shocks anyways.

Exactly. A pointless expense that would probably cost me 5-600 bucks to replace.

If want to replace them - Sealsavers coil savers, velcro on and cost $50.
Folks use them mostly for off roading but they would work and will last longer

Getting done under warranty.
Apparently quite a few hours labour to drop the front suspension to fit.
The sealsavers look a good option for future repairs if new shocks not needed.

Same issue. Dealer told me it will ruin the suspension due to dirt etc in about 7k miles. Replacement is highly recommended....i was told. Costs: 400 euros (370 dollar) incl. VAT

Have you used these Sealsavers on passenger car?

My 2019 x3 M40i front boot was ripped, I replaced it with the Acerbis motorcycle boot. Cut to size and velcroed and zip tied the top. Left the bottom open so any water or dirt can flush itself out. Took about 30 minutes.

I found this quote quote scary as one of my dust covers was found split on a recent inspection.
Fortunately a local indi will replace both front dust covers for £199 for parts labour and tax

Found my dust covers split in several places at just after the 3 year mark and BMW said they wouldn't repair under goodwill even though just out of warranty. Frankly a bit disappointing on such an expensive car with, at the time only about 15k miles. By comparison my wife's, then, 10 year old Vauxhall (95k miles) had no signs of fatigue or splitting to it's shock dust covers! Anyway, as I wasn't happy to pay BMW to have them changed, I set about the splits with Super Glue Gel, (which is slightly flexible when it sets). Bit of a pain to get the rubber clean before gluing but, after periodically checking, it appears to have lasted. The car is now nearly 5 years old and repairs still looking good, so that's an alternative solution to consider.

mine is 4 years and 44000 miles so not so bad I guess

But having cars up to 3 years and 30K+ miles a year when working I never had any dust cover or such require replacement

By chance I came across this thread - both covers on my (just under) 3yr 30e with 42k miles have split - being replaced in the new year. I assume under warranty (it’s a company car). The vehicle health check from when they were detected last week states £26 each. They should really be lasting longer.
