My 2020 X3 has the same place in the manual about remote software upgrades too but X3s do not have it. You can check to see if you have it in the menu setting the manual refers to but I'm betting it will not be there just like the rest of ours. If it is then that would be huge news for us that have been wishing it would come.

So maybe what automatically "becomes available" is the Remote Software Upgrade functionality. |

At some point when you take yours in for service, request a G20 3-series with ID7 as a loaner, and you'll see what a full version ID7 vehicle is like. It has the Remote Software Upgrade menu item under car settings even though there are no new updates available. It even shows the current software version. We can hope that our X3's somehow gain that capability as many of the dealers think that they have it already - and it can be complicated getting some SAs to understand that they manually have to update our software regardless of a warranty issue - but I just took my 03/2020 production X3 with ID7 in for a software upgrade to get AA, and it still does not have that RSU option under car settings. |

No, without the menu entry it's not there and never will be. Otherwise you would have had the AA update without a dealer visit.

Not strictly true. Plenty of new m135i owners with remote software update capability have no option to download AA yet. A few have paid to have the dealers update their car to AA rather than wait for the expected OTA at end of the year. At least in the UK that is. |

Android auto is only available from dealer programming software at this time and not yet available for remote software upgrade (which X3 does not have). Remote software upgrade is currently at 19/11 and I believe some cars have been getting 20/03. Android auto was released with 20/07 software in July.

Yeah, that's apparently true. From my BMW ConnectedDrive account:

Maybe it's a firmware and not a hardware limitation. After all, map updates are OTA. So MAYBE the next dealer-installed software upgrade will include OTA capability for future upgrades.

The fact it made it into both the MY2020 5-Series manual and the MY2020 X3 manual makes me think this was less of an "accident". That being said, who knows if it will ever be resolved. Really burns my coals though that this wasn't made clear to us before we purchased. |

I took my car in two days ago and they told me my MY20 x3 does not have the hardware for android auto, they would need to purchase a retrofit kit and install. Sigh... I thought all MY20 model with the digital dash is capable of updating to android auto..

BMW have left existing owners completely in the dark with zero information on this. Why even bother coming out with an update at all when owners are not told they can get it, dealers are not told owners can request it and the vehicle can't be updated OTA or even USB by the owner? All we have is word of mouth and that's just not good enough. Rob |

There has to be a business reason behind BMW not wanting to provide the update.
Either from the manufacturer or at the local dealership level. If I'm willing to pay the labor rate specified by the manufacturer and get the update give it to me. If your technicians are too inept to perform it in an amount of time that allows you to be profitable, that's not our problem. Apologies for my rant but I am in a similar business and unless your hardware doesn't support the software, you get it. I got my stack of acorns waiting for my dealer service manager to call me back and tell me to bring the car in for the last two weeks |
