Tire Size
Had a passenger rear flat on my 2021 X4M comp. Seemed like an ideal time to go with 295X35R. Kept the 255s up front. Nice look, nice ride and very sure footed.

Problem I’m running into is the sidewall design. The 295/35/21 pairs that I am getting are coming with the full ring Michelin Premium Touch design. My stock tires don’t have that so the sidewalls are different. If I may ask, where/how did you get the 295/35/21 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S without the full ring Premium Touch design? Or another possibility would be to get the 255 fronts with the Premium Touch design but I can’t find those either.

What I find odd is the M40i comes with 275 (w/ 21s) rear vs 265 on the X3M. I am assuming the M division did this to help turn in and reduce push under heavy cornering. Doubting many are tracking these vehicles but assuming a 295/265 setup would alter balance in extreme cornering.

Yes, that’s a great point as well. There are many factors with these tires. The BMW “star” spec is also supposed to be specifically designed per axel. Meaning the compound BMW directed Michelin to use is different in the front vs the back. The 255 in the front is designed with 4 compounds with an emphasis on dry traction and steering precision. The rear tires have only two compounds. Apparently BMW preferred dry handling and track use with a slight compromise to wet weather handling. It doesn’t seem as simple as just moving your rear tires to the front like some have done. At least not if you want to keep to the BMW specifications.
I believe the M40i has a 275 rear with a sorter sidewall then our 21” tires on the X3M comp. Maybe it was a monetary decision for BMW or possibly a space limitation. Who knows. It definitely sucks from an aesthetic standpoint to have an X3M with narrow rear tires. It really disturbs the look. My plan was to keep the 255’s on the front axel per BMW spec. That way I stay true to the front tire compound make up from BMW and then just replace the rear to a 295. On a side note the star BMW 295 PS4S is actually the front tire of the X5M competition. Keep that in mind if you're concerned with tire compound make up front vs rear. Also the standard X3M comp fitment amongst other BMWs has a dead on 1% diameter difference between front and rear. This seems to matter more because these vehicles have xDrive, which in the M models is supposedly very sensitive to that spec. A 255 or 265 front and 295 rear keeps you below 1% but a 255/295 keeps the rear diameter larger than the front, which is the BMW factory spec. All that being said I can’t find 295 Michelin PS4S to match the sidewall of the front 255’s that came with the vehicle. I don’t know where you guys ordered your tires from, but I have had no luck. The ones I keep getting are with the Michelin Premium Touch design that is “Full ring.” (see attached) Last edited by Kabes; 02-26-2022 at 01:31 PM.. |

Can you send a picture of yours showing the two different sidewall designs together? Maybe if I see it I can decide if it’s something I can live with. Right now my OCD won’t let me see beyond it.

Wow that’s a nice looking machine you have there. Looks like you have spacers too. I may have to consider doing it with the different sidewalls after all.

Changed my stock tires (Conti's) to Michelin PS4 All Seasons in 295/35 and 255/40 and I have to say, the ride quality change is pretty significant. Both in terms of comfort and road noise, the bump up is noticeable. Highly recommend it for sure.

What about TPMS settings? Did you all change to Winter/All-Year? I kept mine on "Summer" and 255/265 21....

Why 265 front, when a 255 FITS

The overall tire height isn't a dead even exact match, but it's as close as you're currently going to get given the current tire size options available from the PS4 model line today... Don't overlook rim width and tire height Hi Kevin, I assume that yours is an M40i, and that you mounted the 265/40 and 295/35 on the stock OE 21" rims, with widths of 8.5 and 9.5. Please confirm. It just seems: 255's fit without rubbing, and are right at the maximum width recommended when using 8.5" rims. They are also only .3 taller than an OE 245's. Why go up to a 265 which is .5 too wide for the rim, is .6 inches taller than OE, and rubs? The 295's are also 1/2 inch too wide for the 9.5 inch rim, but no one has reported rubbing. I am willing to fugde a little with the 295's, because there isn't a choice. But I think that oversizing the fronts with 265's, especially if they rub, is unnecessary. Anyway, to each his own of course, and a salute all the adventuresome car guys on the forum. |

I'm assuming you still have the OE Wheels (21x10) on the rears...?
If so, the spec for the 315/35/21 tires is a minimum 10.5" width wheel.
