Super engine and trans combo!
Ive got 2 older BMWs and Im coming from a GLK 3.5 V6 to this car and I cannot believe the power and smoothness from this engine and ZF 8 speed autobox combination. Kudos to BMW- this thing moves 2 tons of x3 like the best V8s of my youth.Well done!

Agreed. The ZF transmission in particular is excellent.

Agreed. The ZF 8-speed is shockingly good. I came from a 2015 Audi S3 with the dual-clutch transmission (with aftermarket software) and the M40i shifts both faster and smoother.

As well as the X3 M40i for family duties, i recently had a pair of M240i's for work. Same engine, same gearbox, even better noise.
Now my work vehicles have been replaced and we're running a pair of M2 Competitions instead of the M240i's. They're powered by the S55 and geared by the 7 speed DCT 'box. Sadly the engine doesn't sound as good and is much less economical, and the gearbox (whilst it's the best version of BMW's DCT so far) just isn't a patch on the ZF8 in 99% of driving. Long live the B58 & ZF8 combo.
