Snow Setup on M40i

Hello,

Has anyone in North America contemplated using non-BMW rims for their snow tires setup ? I just checked the BMW website and they want 3500 for 20 inch rims and snow tires (pirelli scorpion)—the only setup they have listed.

Tire rack's configurator shows packages with blizzaks and Generic 18 inch rims for about 1500 dollars. Not sure the better looks are worth the 2000 extra dollars.

I had an 2012 x3 35i with 19 inch all seasons and it's traction was crap in snow so when i bought the new m40i I got it with summer tires knowing I would put snow tires and rims on.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I will be driving in snowy mountain conditions this winter

I am also looking into getting another set of either UHP all seasons or snow tires. One thing to keep in mind is that the M40i has large brakes, and it may need a 19" wheel to clear the calipers.

I had the same feeling. No need to spend 4-5K on a winter setup.

With that said, I looked for rims that were at least roll formed. I went with these (hope they look ok lol)

https://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Whee...9&autoModClar=

In the 19". I called my local store and had them order instead. They were only about $50 higher than tire rack and would rather support local....

As for tires, after a ton of research I went with these:

https://www.nokiantires.com/winter-t...liitta-r3-suv/

Which I bought fro the link below. They are getting a truck in within the next week. This tire is pretty new for this year so not a lot of places carry them....

https://www.tiresbyweb.com/p-12642-n...suv-tires.aspx

I also have a thread here on wheel woes where I was having trouble figuring out all the options. https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1525017

I bought Replika R198 19x8.5 et 25 square setup. They have the correct bolt pattern and 66.6mm hub bore. Will move the wheels out 5mm front and back, don't think it will be noticable. I originally went for 9.5" rears, but they won't fit a 255 tire, apparently winters at 255 are 7-9" wheel.

We are pretty limited on wheel options that don't require sacrificing our first born to the Bavarians.

For tires I went with Michelin Latitude Xi2 235-55-19, 255-50-19. They are 1.3-1.7% larger diameter than the stock 21s.

I bought last month a set of VMR V710 20x9 ET35 rims in a square setup. Fits the M40i perfectly. Only problem is that the wheels came with all season tires so I'll run those until they wear out and go for Blizzaks. If you're going to get non-BMW rims, just make sure the bolt pattern and centerbore are the same. Offset ends up being pretty close to the stock winter setup.

I got Autec TYPE K - KITANO BLACK.

Wheels 8x19 ET30 no spacers required. Wheels take original bolts and do not require rings – these also take the OE BMW caps.

I am planning on winter tires and wheels as well for my 2019 x3 m40i. We ordered the car with run flat tires. I have previously had Michelin snows and LOVED them. Michelin doesn't make a run flat snow tire. What are your thoughts for not having a spare and going with non run flat tires?

I'm rolling the dice with no run flats. I've managed to get away with it on my 2 series for 4 years. You could always throw one of those mobility kits in your trunk.

Personally i would at minimum carry a donut so you can limp home if something happens.

Do you have a model number for a donut? I found this listing, best price so far, but I may confirm with the dealer that its the right part. Pricewise a little more expensive than the mobility kit.

https://www.bmwpartswarehouse.com/BM...-6-863-416.htm

Has anyone had any experience with the mobility kit?

I chose to stay with run flats. Ordered from Tire Rack- Bremmer Kraft BR10 rims and 19” Blizzak LM001

Had them shipped to the BMW dealer for storage.

Don't have room in my small garage and can't wrestle with them. Previous car was an Acura RDX and for 3 years I stored and transported 17" wheels to switch over. That got old fast. With larger and heavier 19" and older back...I'm done with that.

I test fit my 19" Replika 198 winter today on the front. Et 25 fits nicely with no poke. Only pushed out 5mm further than the 21s. Good bang for your buck for winters.

I bought them from 1010 tires for less than $200/wheel. That was Canadian dollars, so you could probably do better. Not sure who distributes them in the US, Replika is a company based in Montreal.

Overall the wheels are pretty nice, they aren't as polished looking as the OEM summers, but the differences aren't noticeable and they will be filthy 90% of the time.

I got an entire set including wheels, tires, and TPMS for $2,500 CAD, roughly $1,900 US.

Looks like 1010 tires has a warehouse in California, you can probably get them through them. Not sure if anyone else distributes them in the US, can't find anything looking at google.

The 19x8.5" ET25 fit for sure. They reviewed my order and said they fit.

I had to manually cobble together my order, their website tries to set you up with 20s.

4 - 19x8.5" ET 25 66.6CB
I used 235/55/19 fronts, 255/50/19 Michelin Xi2 (These are 0.7% difference diameter, within the 1% allowable for Xdrive)

You could also go for square 245s all the way around.
