Winter setup

First I checked search options but didn't find....

I got m40i on 20" with bridgestone alenza tires, im sure that's sux on snow, and my question is is that ok to just change too winter tires ??( pirelli scorpion) with my wheels? And after winter put it again summer setup?? Is that ok for tires or not???
Ps. I don't want spend another 2k$ ( in this year)just for rims and tires that's why my question maybe in next year I'm going to buy extra set if rims

I have the same RF tyres but in 21”s. I have heard that RF’s are not great with being swapped over due to stiffer sidewall etc. 19”s for winter seem to be way to go, so finding used is your best option. But maybe ask tyre shops their thoughts on changing over. Damage to rims with swapped over is my biggest concern, but I too don’t want to spend a fortune on spare wheels, but probably what I will do. Plenty on here seem to sell wheels and tyres but mainly US based, which doesn’t help me.

I did that on previous X3 for about 4 years. No issues - but you are reliant on provider not to f**k up your rims.

The only reason I switched tactics this time is that I calculated with the cost of switching tyres, twice a year, storage etc... it was just as $$$ wise to buy my own rims and switch them myself. Bonus - at the end of lease I can (hopefully!) sell the rims.

"but you are reliant on provider not to f**k up your rims."

This is also my main concern. Plus, switching back and forth can weaken the sidewall. Honestly, if you're not leasing/plan on keeping it more than three years, bite the bullet.

"Bonus - at the end of lease I can (hopefully!) sell the rims."

Depending on how long you keep the car OP, this is a valid consideration.

Had the same situation myself with my X4 M40i and decided to just swap tires for the season. My dealer actually recommended I go to a certain local performance auto shop as "they have better tire mounting and balancing equipment than we do". I appreciated that very much.

Short story is, using my stock rims they replaced my Bridgestone 20" performance with Continental All-season staggered NRFT twice now mounted and balanced, with no rim damage, pack the removed tires in plastic bags for me to store until the season changes again. Cost me total about $150. each time. I'm happy with this route.

Same here, I always swap tires so I avoid that work and also no need to check pressure.

You can find 19s for $800, the tires are cheaper than 20s as well. A bunch of us have sourced wheels for much cheaper than BMW sells for. Swapping tires twice a year is a pain in the ass.

I am shopping for Winter package as well. Still thinking between 18" set vs 19" setup.

Anyone have issue with 18" setup??
For 19" setup, does 245/50/19 tire fit well with 19X8.5 rims?

my understanding is that 18" won't fit the M40i due to calipers, 19"s the smallest size, but suppose may depend on alloys

BTW - I forgot to add - I waited (or rather, stumbled upon) the BMW sale around thanksgiving/black friday time. I *think* they were something like 2800 but went down to about 2200. Seems a lot but like I said, calculating the £80 (tyres on the drive now charge this :-/) swapover and about same for storage (house won't take them). Another £80. So that's £320 a year(!), the cost of the other tyres (say £1200 for argument's sake).

So (this is from memory - work it out for yourself)

BMW option in sale -> £2200 (then sell the rims after lease ends four years)
Self option -> Tyres (£1200) four years of the re-fitting/storage (£1280) = £2480
(sure would use > 1 set in that time, but that's true for either option)

Looking at that again I must have screwed it up somewhere - but after a few glasses of Rioja I can't figure how :-) . Either way - after the lease end, assuming you look after your lovely BMW rims, get on Ebay. Sure, other people like teaston have gone non-BMW for cheaper - which look equally as cool with less resale value (although to be fair less initial outlay too!).

Have fun. BTW the X3 is a tractor in the snow with winters.

The Alenza tires are a deathtrap in the snow. I never experienced such poor performance in any of my other cars before.

I have the 21" rims. I only have 1 option for winter tires. Heck I would have done all season too but none is available.

I am shopping for winter package as well. I want to run 20s in the winter though.. just because I think it'll look nicer. Checked some replica wheels ( replika ) but they don't seem to make 20s.

18’s are fine, we only have 348mm front discs after all.

I’m shopping for a 20inch setup as well. There are 20x9 options but I haven’t settled on anything yet. Please let me know if you find something.

I have sourced a set of 20" Conti Viking winters with a AG M580 replica rim in gloss black using a local shop " Tunerworks " , I Should receive them in a couple days but I went with a 20" in order to get away from a run flat whilst having a couple of choices as I was being limited in the 19" size range. The cost came out to being comparable between the 20's vs. 19's due to the lack of a run flat.

I mean, they're not winter tires... All non-winter tires suck in the snow unless it's like a jeep or something.

Interesting then that BMW don’t offer this size as an option. Not the discs I was led to believe but the calipers as stated.

Non OEM may work in some cases, but not the route I would go. (Not looking for discussion/argument on OEM vs. Non, as well aware there are many good manufacturers out there like BBS, OZ, ispiri etc etc)

The calipers are larger than the Fxx M Sport ones, but as the discs are 22mm smaller it means the overall brake package is no larger than before. 18" oem wheels fitted the Fxx too.

I ain't gonna "try it out"!

Only options OEM-wise below.

Most other Non BMW sites I looked at suggest only 19/20/21 as options.

Yeah I'd recommend 19s there's no reason to go down to 18s really.

The Autec Kitano's are a great option.

Unless having an 18" diameter allows you to find a narrower tread winter tire that still meets load requirements. Narrower is superior for winter on snow/ice. Also, they tend to cost less.
