X3/X4 M40i Exhaust Specs

Anyone have the exhaust specs for the X3/X4 M40i over the years?

Did anything change with the move to the 382hp 2020 model other than the "hedifold"-supporting turbo manifold?

Anyone know the difference between the 2018 & 2019 M40i exhaust and the 340i, 340i "MPPSK" exhaust, and the m340i exhaust?!?

-It seems like the "M340i" and X3/X4 M40i is being branded with an "M Performance Exhaust", I'm assuming that that is the same as the MPPSK exhaust that was made available for the earlier 340is, but can anyone confirm either way?

-I'm interested in the exhaust diameters and # and type of any cross overs, etc... Just curious at what power levels the various exhausts become a bottle neck.

I believe the 2020 Supra's stock downpipe starts at 4.5" diameter off the turbo and the exit is 3.15", which connects to the stock Y pipe which goes from 3.15" to dual 3" exits. Extreme Turbo Systems offers a 4.5" -> 4" downpipe and a 4" oval -> 3" dual exit Y pipe.

-Going from the 4.5" down to 3.15" to connect to dual 3" never made any sense and I have to think that ETS did it because it becomes a power limitation at some point...

I have little hope the G01 / G01 platforms will see the same support as the Supra with the M40i as only one engine option, but it DOES make me curious what BMW has been doing with these exhaust systems from the factory...

Two versions of new b58. Lesser one has the hedifold and is featured in the Supra. Tother one is separate exhaust manifold and produces the 382 ponies.

Way more than 2 versions already.

The various B58 engines can be separated by "generation" / "Technical Update" version (TU0 vs. TU1), as shown in the last # in the Engine Code.

They can also be separated by their power-level code as shown by the last letter in the Engine Code: "M" for Mittel (Medium power spec), or "O" Obere (upper power spec).

TU0 Engines
B58B30M0 "Medium Performance"
B58B30M0: 240 kW (321 HP) version
Applications:

2016–2019 G11/G12 740i/Li
2016–present F32/F33/F36 440i
2016–2019 F30/F31/F34 340i
B58B30M0: 250 kW version (335 HP)
Applications:

2016–2019 F20/F21 M140i
2016–present F22/F23 M240i[11]
2017–2019 G30/G31 540i[12]
2017–2019 G32 640i
B58B30M0: 265 kW version
Applications:

2017-2019 G01 X3 M40i[13]
2018-2019 G02 X4 M40i
B58B30M0: 265 kW (355 HP) version
This version was used for 3-/4-Series with the "M Performance Power Pack and Sound Kit".

Applications:

2016-2019 F30/F31/F34 340i[14]
2016-present F32/F33/F36 440i
2017-2019 G30/G31 540i[15]

TU1 Engines
B58B30M1 "Medium Performance"
B58B30M1: 250 kW (335 HP)
Applications:

2018-present G05 X5 xDrive40i/sDrive40i[16]
2018-present G07 X7 xDrive40i
2018-present G29 Z4 M40i (in countries subject to EU emissions standards)[17]
2020-present G30/G31 540i
2020–present G32 640i
2020-present G06 X6 xDrive40i
2020-present G11/G12 740i
2020-present G14/G15/G16 840i
2020 Morgan Plus Six[18]

B58C30O1 "Upper Performance"
335 HP -this is the special 2020+ Supra SKU engine

B58B30O1 "Upper Performance"
382 HP -This is the new TU1 spec engine in the 2018+ Z4 M40i, 2019+ M340i, 2020+ G01 X3 M40i and 2020+ G02 X4 M40i (Despite wikipedia saying 2019+ on these).

-Based upon the TU1 PDF that got leaked, I believe that all engines ending in "01" include the hedifold. The same document hinted that there's a lower power version and a higher power version that has improved exhaust ports in the head. (Might be the difference between the C30O1 and the B30O1...)

That's my best guess. I'd LOVE to see whether the 2020 X3 / X4 M40is have a head-to-turbo manifold that includes 2 ports or 6 ports. -Sinbad, you've got a 2020 X3 M40i -does the manifold have 2 ports or 6 where it attaches to the head?

Hi Adam,

I'm with you. I thought almost the exact same. TU1 = Technical Update 1. I posted stuff earlier in various forums over past few months.. but I was wrong. The 335 hp version is used in the Supra. Tear down video shows it features the integrated exhaust header. Cylinder head has only two exhaust ports; these two ports drive the twin scroll turbo.

The MY2020 X3/X4 M40i feature the B58M30O1. It absolutely does NOT have an integrated exhaust header. When I received my 2020 X3 M40i a few weeks ago, I went to make doubly sure. It's at dealer now. I will take a pic when I get it back (tomorrow). I am perfectly OK with external header - seams easier to fix. The B58 external exhaust header is an interesting 3 piece system that splits airflow for the twin scroll turbo. I think it's kind of pretty.

There is lots of info out there, much of it is conflicting. This is pretty good (but list 340 HP for ML engine.: https://www.bmwblog.com/2018/10/31/b...88-horsepower/

I have also read that the B58 features coolant cooled turbo. Teardown video of Supra version shows that version does NOT cool with engine coolant - only oil. I would really like to verify if previous version and / or updated 382 HP version actually have this cooling feature. I love the idea of liquid cooled turbo. haven't yet found a teardown.

Pasting pick of B58B30M1 382hp and video of 335hp version tear down.

Supra engine teardown:

You're the first person who has been able to definitively say either way whether the new TU1 382 hp B58 in the 2020 G01/G02 M40is have the integrated hedifold or not. -I fully expected them to do so, but I guess the Supra "C" engine really is going to remain its own strange beast.

So strange to see them move towards the hedifold and back again...
