As of today, the BMW website has moved my M40i to production! When I also called the 1-800 number and input my production number, it said car would be complete on Oct 20!!

I understand they're holding the first cars until they get the gas mileage certification.

When I asked today about my early build date, my dealer confirmed that the new X3's were indeed on EPA/CARB hold. He said BMWNA has made November 11 the retail launch date here and so that they wouldn't be allowed to actually sell them before then. So while my build might be complete on Oct 20, it might have to sit at dealer a little while before I can pick it up.

.....perhaps I can visit it....

We also discussed PCD. He said BMW wouldn't allow him to request a PCD date till November 11, meaning earliest I'd likely get scheduled would be December. He also said (despite rumors to the contrary) that factory tours were still suspended anyway. So I'll have to pass on PCD. Maybe do the driving school instead.....

Yeah, I was told similar when I placed my order. They said that even though I was build week 44 that they tend to build up and the first few weeks release simultaneously, so I’d be closer to launch. They indicated this happens for most new releases. I thought maybe I’d be able to test drive one while I was waiting but it sounds like that might not be the case.

That's interesting, they let me schedule a Welt Delivery before the retail launch date. But it isn't until the end of December, right before the holiday break.

For those with an early build before December, did anyone get the Lane Change Assist option? The BMW film from June says this would only be available from December 2017.

I'm curious if cars built before December include this option.

What is that exactly? If I google it more than half of the results are 'lane change warning', etc. Maybe it is new?

On my build I have:
ZN1 Active Blind Spot Detection

ZN4 Lane Departure Warning

ZDA Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning w/City Collision Mitigation, &
Cross-traffic alert rear

ZDB/5AT Active Cruise Control w/Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant w/ side collision avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, Evasion Aid, & Cross-traffic alert front

When steering and lane change assist is activated if you want to make a lane change holding down the direction indicator half way will let your X3 make the lane change automatically if the sensors detect a clear opening.

It's part of ZDB:

Quote:
BMW Personal CoPilot: a comprehensive line-up of driver assistance systems.

When it comes to driver assistance and (semi-)automated driving, all the systems currently offered by BMW are available, such as the latest generation of Active Cruise Control (ACC), whose capabilities include braking the car to a halt in stop-and-go traffic and automatically pulling away again. The Steering and lane control assistant, Lane Change Assistant (est. from December 2017) and Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision protection all form part of the optional Driving Assistant Plus safety package and work via active steering inputs. Together with the Priority warning, Wrong-way warning and Crossing traffic warning systems, these functions enhance both comfort and safety, while also setting standards in the class.

That specific option is estimated to be available from December 2017 only according to the description. I'm wondering if this an be added by software update to cars built before December 2017.

(est. from December 2017)

Not sure I could ever get myself comfortable using it anyway. Changing lanes seems like one of those things the driver should really be involved with, as opposed to letting the car do it when it measured the distance as suitable.

If traffic is heavy, you often need to accelerate as well, especially if you are changing lanes to get out from behind a slow driver. Wonder what the computer will do....??

If traffic is light, then it doesn't matter-so why not do it yourself?

Could end up being one of those things, though, that I never thought I needed until I had it.....I can still remember thinking texting was a silly feature.

Per BMW Genius hotline, my M40i has finished production and quality checks and is waiting to be shipped! Dealer says I'll have to wait till official release date on Nov 11 to actually pick it up--though I'm hoping to get to at least test drive it before that. He had said this would be similar to other new model releases. Anyone else have experience with that??

Yeah. It's like waiting for Christmas only to have your parents say you have to wait till the relatives come a week later to open your presents!!

Curious if anyone with a 30i that is "in production" has a VIN number yet or if the BMW reps can cite that the vehicle is in status 151 - body shop started.

My week 42 build was moved to 43 (not sure if dealer misquoted) but when I called on 10/23, completion was 10/24. And when I called yesterday to confirm, the date was now 10/25. So a call to a real person indicated that the date was 10/25, but there was no VIN number assigned yet, and the car had not gone into the body shop yet for some reason. She was as pleasant as she could be, but indicated it is unlikely the car will complete today, and could not see any information as to why the order hadn't gone to the body shop yet.

Sounds like some element of the build may not be available as I know from past orders, the manufacture goes from 151 to 152 (Paint) to 153 (Assembly) in a few days. So if a component isn't available, they'll defer the build.

Anyone else have better news, or are all 30i's in the same status?

.
