MT tried some lighter wheels...

https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/10/18/h...a-bmw-x3-m40i/

From the article:

Rather than the stock wheels, MT’s X3 M40i now has very lightweight OZ Hyper GT HLT wheels. Those new wheels are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, which are big upgrades over the stock Bridgetstones it was wearing. So does just a simple wheel/tire upgrade really make that much of a difference?

Apparently, yes. According to MT, the new setup dropped the car’s overall curb weight 34 pounds. That might not sound like a lot but that’s unsprung rotational mass that’s been reduced. So it actually makes the car feel lighter on its feet, while also improving ride quality. More that that, the new setup reduced braking distance from 60-0 mph by nine feet. That’s a huge difference. It also improved the BMW X3 M40i’s figure-eight time by almost a second, dropping it to 25-seconds flat. That makes the X3 M40i faster than the previous X6 M on MT’s figure-eight test.

Even more impressive, the stickier shoes and lighter weight helped improve the BMW X3 M40i’s 0-60 mph time by almost half of a second, dropping it to 4.4 seconds. That’s seriously quick and only about another half a second behind the proper X3 M. All while riding better and being significantly cheaper. I really love the BMW X3 M a lot but the X3 M40i with some upgrades might be the way to go.

Impressive results for a wheel and tire change, here is the wheel...

I wonder how much of the weight saving was due to the Pilot Sports not being RFTs...if they are.

Gong from the stock Alenza 001 RFT to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is a weight savings of 24 lbs.

I'm sure there's a big improvement in ride and handling. And while losing 34lbs in rotating mass (tires+ wheels) plus stickier tires should be bring some improvement in 0-60mph times, 4.8 to 4.4 sec seems a bit extreme. Some of this difference may well be due to their initial 0-60 time for the car on stock wheels and tires being a bit on the slow side, slower than others had reported.

I think MT was using BMW's quoted 0-60 time. Like you mentioned, with just different wheels and tires a 0.4 sec 0-60 drop is wishful thinking.

Funny, I chose that wheel in 19" as my Winter wheel, shod with Hakkapeliittas. It's a nice wheel.

I think first test was bad or weren’t using equipment. C&D got 4.4 stock

BMW's time for 0-60 is 4.6, the 4.8 is 0-62. So it's lazy reporting, I guess they weren't wanting to spoil the story with detail and actual facts.

That or they just reported the numbers they received in their testing. Arguing over fractions of a second seems pretty silly here. Testing environments can change dramatically depending on weather, temperature, driver, etc. I think what the experienced reader of car performance testing understands here is that this particular publication saw a marked increase in performance by dumping the significant weight of both the run flat tires and the stock wheels. All told, that is a chunk of weight to save and definitely changes both the acceleration and handling characteristics in a noticeable manner.
