My dad has been riding me for the last 2-3 years about the fact that his KIA Sorento has remote start and my X3 doesn't. Now I'm getting a 2020 X3 M40i and it still doesn't have a feature his Kia came standard with? It's absolutely ridiculous, but at the same time you have to find some humor in it.

Btw, who needs that adjustment? Never once had an issue with strap height. I'm 6'4, so maybe it's for shorter folk? |

They call it "Puffing" and there is a $60.00 fine if caught with your car running and you are not in it. Not a big deal but still discourages some...so far 200+ cited in 2019.

Im heading towards a hot summer again and it will be my second without remote start to cool down after having had it in several non BMW (and cheaper) cars prior. |

Yes, it's baffling. Either incompetence or they fucked us over on purpose as part of some grand scheme to encourage model turnover. I suspect many brands purposely dilute new revisions to prevent initial years from being "too good." /Tin foil hat

Well if you had, then you'd know this is an easy answer: lawyers. "but but but other companies do it and how come BMW can't blah blah blah " Corporate Legal says: if those other companies jumped off a liability bridge, should we? Lawyers. |

If you meant 'how does puffing' law make sense, it's because a traditional car with engine running and keys in it is very easy to steal. But a remote start car isn't. If it's like several GM cars I've owned, the car will remain locked, and even if you get in, it will not allow you to put it in gear and drive unless you put your foot on the brake and press the start button with key in the car first. Trying to just put it in gear kills the engine. That's why the 'puffing' laws are irrelevant to remote start, and why some regions explicitly exempt them. That's a good thing. |

Although I see NJ can fine for 'excessive idling' (over 3 minutes) in some cases on basis of pollution. Lots of factors, but I still want it in my BMW! |

Remote Start Is Useless
I took delivery of a 2019 330xi last week and I am questioning the remote start function already because it does not heat or cool the car, nor does it activate the defrosters. Basically, as far as I can tell, it just warms the engine. Nothing else turns on until you press the brake and the start button. So what are the benefits of a remote start in a BMW? My parents have a Hyundai that costs half what a BMW costs and their remote start activates whatever is appropriate given the weather conditions at the time.
