Wireless Charging Pad getting worse

Folks,

How is others experience of the wireless charging pad?

It's never been breathtaking in performance but when I first got the vehicle I could at least get it to consistently charge my iPhone 8 at about 1% every 5 mins.

A year into ownership, things have deteriorated badly. Now:
  • Rarely properly engages (blue light) without multiple attempts and repositioning.
  • Frequently disengages (amber light) for no apparent reason. This is frustrating as there is no audible warning for this, so you rarely notice until you get to your destination and find the phone hasn't charged at all. You have to remove and replace the phone to get it going again.
  • Charging performance much worse and the phone gets VERY hot. This is in contrast to my desktop Anker wireless charger that charges the phone faster and without any heat.
  • Frequent dash warnings that there is a "Mobile Device in the Charging Tray" when leaving the vehicle despite the tray being empty.

For me the last point is the most indicative something has broken internally, it never used to do this (unless there was actually a phone in the tray).

Are others seeing the same?

your one and only solution is take it back to bmw service shop, have them replace it.

When I told them it did not work well, they came back and said it is working.

I asked, if the windshield wiper took a minute to go across the windshield, would you say that is working?

They said that the blue light it on so it is working.

When I return for my next oil change I am telling them to either replace the wireless charger or keep it until they do. It will be out of warranty soon.

My wife's SQ5 charges about 1% per 3-5 minutes. A 15 minute test drive went from 93% to 97%. My bmw, 6hrs does not even keep up with the normal drain of the phone...which usually lasts 1.5 days under regular use.

The BMW one is absolute crap. I now have a scosche wireless charger mounted on my center console since the bmw one is useless to me. No positive experiences ever.

I think the reason why the BMW one doesn't perform well is because of wireless CarPlay. It is utilizing a Bluetooth and Wifi connection for CarPlay and then running whatever app you are using at the time. Lots of battery drain occurring while trying to recharge over a slow charging wireless setup.

Hi,
Our wireless charging pad had same symptoms as the OP’s one.
Took car to BMW service centre and showed them the problem - would charge for just a few minutes and then light went from blue to orange.
BMW replaced pad under warranty - new one is working fine (although still not the fastest wireless charger that we own!)
Cheers
Steve

Hi,
I did wonder that - but I had problems with my less than 1 year old IphoneX and took it to Apple Store in Abu Dhabi.
They exchanged it under warranty for a brand new phone.
Both the original and brand new phones had problems - until the charging pad was changed.
Cheers
Steve

I only use it to charge my display key occasionally, however I must admit the key gets red hot .

Me too I have a phone mount in the cup holder hole and a cable running to the USB Socket, my phone doesn't have wireless and if it did I wouldn't be able to see the Safety Camera warning software running on it if it was in the tray

I have an old iPhone 6 (from work) and so charge it via a USB cable. The wireless charger, seems good in theory, but in practice, I shouldn't have to carry oven gloves in the car to remove my key after driving home

In my experience, this performance is par for the course. My phone doesn't really charge up, it more just stays level, which is fine, but the biggest issue is that it gets so incredibly hot. Given this, I would say the option isn't that much of a perk, but more of a gimmick.

Any correlation between heat/performance of the charger and the types of cases?

Our X3 is still on order and you're making me wish I skipped this option

Exact same issues that I’ve experienced. Strange, but it seemed to work OK for about a year.

I’ve tried it both with and without a case, with iPhones and Samsung Galaxy S10. Same behavior. It’s a great feature/option, when it works.

That's a feature for the winter months. Why else would they charge 500 bucks for 10 dollars worth of hardware?

Not sure if it's applicable to the OP, but there are reports of iOS 13.1.3 causing wireless charging issues with iPhones

https://www.imore.com/ios-1313-seems...ampaign=social

"Many of the complaints seem to suggest that the iPhone 11 will recognise that it has been placed on a wireless charger, but won't actually charge up the battery. Some users have even reported the phone heating up, but not charging"
