Cross shopping with Model Y Performance?
As it became time to turn in my M3cs, I knew right off the bat that the X3M would be on the short list. However, after running through a gamut of test drives (SQ5, GLA45, X5M50, Macan S), the one other car I keep coming back to is the Model Y Performance. It has the space that I'm looking for, performance is wild and I think it looks great (subjective I know).
What was a slam dunk for the X3M comp has now become a toss up for me and I'm seriously in anguish over this decision, lol. So now I'm here and wondering if anyone else cross shopped the two and what their thoughts were. I see that the MYP has been talked about lightly here in the past but I'm really looking for the down and dirty honest opinions ![]() Thanks! |

Honestly these 2 cars aren't comparable, they are vastly different. If the Model Y appeals to you then that's probably the obvious choice. The characteristics that X3M buyers look for aren't found on the Model Y. I don't mean to come across as crass, just being honest.

Again I think the Model Y stands on its own merits but to compare it to the X3M is a bit odd. |

My wife drives a Model 3 and there’s no way I’d do two electric cars at this point. I love the sound of an internal combustion engine for one, and for two I think the X3M blows the Y out of the water in the looks department. My wife wants a Y next though and it is a great car.

If electric works for you and you don't mind the appliance setup of the Tesla, it's a serious performance car in every day use. It's laugh out loud capable and fast but I think I would tire of it plus I need more range. I'm not sure if I'll have my X3M 3 years or 7 years at this point but something like Model Y (or BMW equivalent) could potentially replace it.

electric = no soul (i.e. no exhaust, engine music)

There was a good thread here where the poster did a comparison (pretty sure it was a Y) and in summary he felt if you just want strait LINE performance the Y was a good choice but the handling and driving were numb.
I personally don’t care for the looks but it has some serious tech and if that’s what you want go for it. An ///M car isn’t for everyone but it sure fits me. |

I am a huge Tesla fan, but I am not ready to buy one for myself. Two reasons for this:
1). The interiors of all Tesla's, especially the Model 3/Y are really cheaply made. Aside from looking at the screen, it is comparable to an economy car. A BMW, Audi, Merc....they are all vastly superior from a quality, fit and finish perspective. 2). While electric cars are fast as hell from 0-60, it is a very anticlimactic experience for the driver. I drove my cousins Model X with Ludicrous Plus....really fast but never got my heart pumping. There is literally NO visceral experience to electric cars. If you truly love to DRIVE, there is no question which car you go with... -Mark |

I had a 2019 Model 3 Performance that I bought coming from a 2018 Audi S5 Sportback. That straight line insane performance got me. But that gets old quickly and you start to realize a lot of things are missing from the Tesla. For me the most important was the quality - it was nowhere near the level of an Audi, BMW, Mercedes - hell even a Honda, Mazda or any other mid range car. I found myself constantly buying things to make it better - got door seal kits, matte console wrap, inserts for the armrest compartment, replaced interior lights to blue etc. Things that I would have never thought to do in my prior cars. The other aspect was the lack of sound - it felt so sterile and no fun. I was planning on keeping the tesla for at least 6 years. Well, managed to keep it for 1 and couldn't wait to get my X3M Competition. Don't get me wrong, Tesla is great for anyone who doesn't care about driving feel and doesn't mind the spartan interior, but it was just not for me. Once all the cars are electric we will have much better pool to chose from, plus hopefully the new 3/Y generation will get a redesigned interior and much better fit and finish.

Not sure why everyone is high on the Model Y Performance straight line speed when the X3MC is faster from a stop. There is a video of a reviewer stripping out parts on the Y to drop weight, with a full charge and his 0-60 and 1/4 mile times were slower than C&Ds X3MC times.
I get the Y Performance from rolling speeds will have that instant torque pull but from a pure performance standpoint, it's slower 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile and has a lower trap speed. |

Now if you plan to tune and enjoy track days then it's a different story; which I'm guessing is 1/2 the crowd here. I've got an Audi rs3 tuned with e85. Plenty fast, but if they ever get around to adding a ludicrous mode model 3 or Y I'd consider it. Going 130 in the 1/4 mile isn't all that useful in Illinois and just like the x3m, if you don't use launch control it's really not all that quick

And again, straight line speed is ONE factor in a performance car. |

When I cross shopped the two, I actually moved up to looking at the X because the Y feel short in so many catagories. Unfortunately the X was just outside the upper limit of my budget. |

I'm sorry but this is such a weird comparison.....even in straight line the myp can only do a mid 12 quarter mile, the x3m Comp runs a mid 11 and with a tune is low 11s.....that's a massive difference.
The handling and steering on the x3m is miles better. X3m is a proper luxury car that is well built. The model y has lots of known quality control issues and is not exactly built well in terms of fit and finish. The only two advantages the myp has is the efficiency...obviously and Tesla's auto pilot.
