Stock Charge Pipe Boost Limit

Looking for advice on whether it's necessary to upgrade stock charge pipe at this time.

I'm curious what the upper boost limit for the stock charge pipe is. If there measurably is one or it's just a YMMV kind of thing.

Anyone running JB4 map 3 or equivalent flash tune (>+6psi) and not upgrade their charge pipe? Any boost leaks or concerns with sticking to stock? Concerned about longevity?

On the B58s? It was a common issue in older gens all the time.

I'm running JB4 with Map 3 on both ours. I've been told by multiple people the charge pipe on the G01 M40i is not a weak point like it was on the older gen (like my E84 X1).

Having said that, I do have a metal one sitting at home to put on my car, but haven't.

Similar to what Suby mentioned, I've read on other threads people having issues but always on other model years.

Haven't noticed anyone with current gen models mention issues with stock charge pipe, so I figured I'd inquire whether it's still a valid concern.

I haven't chosen a charge pipe yet, recommendations/experiences always welcome, but seeing as how the install seems fairly straight forward and it's not too costly I figured I'd consider upgrading to avoid any issues now that I'll be running with higher boost.

The M40i doesn't look difficult but also isn't exactly straight forward/easy, and there are threads on people breaking stupid plastic nipples in trying to install them.

One of my concerns would be not damaging a sensor during removal or reinstall action.

I was definitely generalizing. I know it’s not an issue for the B58 so much as the N54, but would be concerned with having that remain a plastic component

I just watched this today (Remnant Performance Turbo), and if you skip to the 1:49:00 mark you can see the charge pipe install. Seems fairly straightforward and I thought it was one of the better install videos I’ve seen.

Super easy install. Just take out your intake so you have room to work on the turbo outlet c-clip. The bottom screw that attaches charge pipe to the intake manifold was a little annoying to get to but with the right length tool, it's doable.

If you’re modding the engine at all it’d be foolish to leave that piece oem

I went with the Burger Tuning pipe ‘cuz I like those guys but you’ll have a bunch of other quality options available from $175 ~ $300 as I recall

I run map 3 for daily driving. At full throttle I get peaks of 22psi and average around 20psi. No issues at all.

The stock pipe on B58 is of better quaility than on previous motors, the plastic used back then would seperate and cause a boost leak.

You will be fine on using the stock pipe on JB4 unless you start going bigger turbo/boost, then upgrading will provide peace of mind.

The only thing that may break is the oil drain line for the intake. Here is the install and what piece will break which has been known to fail as it will get brittle from heat.

I'd say I'm averaging 21psi with peaks of 24/25psi.

With that said there are some outliers in my logs that have me concerned with the boost limit. In my last log there was a run with a peak of 27psi in 4th gear at 6,800rpms a seperate run with a peak of 30psi in 4th gear at 6,550rpms.

These are two random events that lasted for a single line on the logs, coincidentally both as I let of the throttle to end the log, but nevertheless those peaks are high.

You know what, coincidentally I saw that on a run I did today. I opened it up on the highway and it peaked at about 30 PSI for a brief second and then came back down. There was no change in the performance of the vehicle has the pool was steady and smooth so I'm thinking that's more of a sensor error than it is your actual boost. I've also had times where I was sitting in park idling and the day before app was showing three PSI of boost. I know there's no way that was happening so clearly there's an issue with how the app is reading the actual Booth pressure.

Does this car have MAP sensors or MAF sensors?

It has a MAP sensor.

Glad to see I'm not alone in this occurenece.

I was considering lowering my FF/waste gate adaptation value in the user adjustments to bring the boost levels down but don't want to end of lowering 99.9% of my desired boost for that .1% event. Especially if it's a misread by the sensor.

When I had jb4 installed I sent logs to Terry for him to check.

I emailed my logs over to Terry at Burger Tuning and he said everything seemed good to him.

Told me no need to send any further logs unless there are issues I'm experiencing or major changes I make for him to check out.

It's running smooth for my daily driving and pulls like a champ in sport+ with shift to the left.

Compared to map 2, my current map 3 I feel is getting to the, "slams you into the back of the seat" kind of fast.

The charge pipe and intake pipe combo will definitley be something I upgrade next, even if it is just for peace of mind. Nice to know it'll also be future proofing for higher boost levels.

Burr001
I would think the fitment of the FTP intake/charge pipe combo for the supra B58D you installed, would be the same for my MY21 as your MY22 right?

Take a quick look at your throttle body and look at the bolt pattern, if its 2 then yes same as mine.
