Wireless Charger

The OEM charger is useless. At best, when running CarPlay in background I have the same charge level when I arrive at my destination as I did when I left. If I’m using Waze or Spotify, forget about it. It’s a shame considering the inherent convenience of wireless charging that this could not have been designed with a little more power. Has anyone modified the factory wireless charging tray to retrofit a fast-charger 10W coil? Is this even possible, or is the tray limited by the input power source? I don’t know all the OEMs even bother putting this junk antiquated chargers in their cars - I would have been better served by an ash tray. I don’t smoke.

I find the wireless pad very poor on many fronts, the design allows the phone to slip and disconnected from charging, the phone will sometimes just get really hot and not charge, sometimes it just doesn't do anything, the one in my old 7 is much better allowing you to secure the phone but I guess that constrains the size that it will accept, I just use a cable these days.

I don't experience the issues you all have described.
iPhone 11 Pro Max before and iPhone 12 Pro Max now.

I don't use a case, phone is naked. Does not slide off charger. It shifts a bit under spirited driving but ever off the charge base to stop charging.

I don't use wayze but I do stream Spotify.
I also do a lot of phone calls and streaming calls.

Phone stays in my bag or pocket for probably 95% of my drives. I'll drop it in the tray for longer drives and if it needs charging. 1 hour + drives. Its always juiced up without even getting warm.

Not only is it uselessly slow....it makes your phone crazy hot....and of course it slides all over...it terrible.

I got a disk mount with a built in wireless charger built in.

It slips? I'm surprised....Either ur phone is naked or you're doing autocross?

I have a basic case and it sticks and charges just fine.

Agree that some third party disk mount is the most practical approach but I can’t help but feel like an Uber driver with those things. I’m a traditionalist and I try to maintain the factory if at all possible. I thought maybe I would settle for one of those cup holder mounted wireless charging magnetic cradles, but that also occupies one of the two cup holders and you are still limited to the almost equally slow and outdated USB plug for power (how is this the only 2020 car in the BMW fleet that still comes without USB C?).

To my original question, do any of the more technically proficient members have any ideas for a DIY solution to upgrade the wireless charger? I’ve thought about pulling it out to break it down and see what I can do, but I’m always hesitant to starting removing trim pieces in BMWs because inevitably tabs are broken and rivets are lost.

I hate to be that guy but you could always use USB if you want faster charging. I haven't seen many wireless chargers in automobiles that are nearly as good as regular ones as they seem to be compromised.

Just a thought... Michael’s or Joann hobby store. Couple mm of foam sheet that can be cut to fit the area of the wireless tray and cut the middle to accommodate phone snug. So foam is snug on tray footprint and your phone is snug thereby totally eliminating spirited drive sliding. Foam sheets come in black and Grey. Can cut a little hole or notch to see the tray light.
