Please download that image file. I don't know why shows up so small when inserted into the forum post.

It's still tiny, even when downloaded. I think this site downsized it when you uploaded the image.

Hey there, first post on the forums. Looking at getting my first BMW - X3 xDrive30i. I'll be financing, most likely through BMWFS. Wondering if I could get thoughts on this quote:

- MSRP: 59,200K
- Discount: $2400
- Rebates: $3500
- Price: $53,300

Not sure how much leverage I have here since this car is in the middle of the country, about 900 miles from where I live. This is my first car purchase in about ten years. Any insight is appreciated!

Your put location as Rhode Island. If so, I guess there is high chance you can find dealerships in Northeast, especially near NYC or Boston, that can give nicer discount.

Thanks...even if the car has to be transported halfway across the country? Finding what I was exactly looking for was a bit of a challenge. It doesn't help that a lot of dealership's inventory search tools are less than ideal.

Wish I would have looked at this thread before I bought my M40i, or not looked at it after I did

I got about 9% off MSRP on a purchase with incentives, and could have done about 12% on an 30i. I did get about $3k more than I was expecting on my trade however.

I thought that was good, but now I feel like a sucker !

Guess I’m posting this more to let someone who sees this thread after the fact and feels that they should have negotiated harder know that their misery has company. That said I needed a car quick, so didn’t have a lot of time to spend haggling.

Building an X3 at east coast normally takes less than a month. If you can wait, maybe you can consider to build the exact one you want.

I suppose I knew this, but after going through the motions, I found that buying off the lot gets you a few percent more discount than custom ordering. Makes sense to me. I got quotes from four dealers for my custom order, two in small markets and two in big markets, and there wasn't much in it. Hundreds cheaper for the big market offers when it's all said and done. I stuck with my local dealer.

Like others, I am not too keen on the general car buying process - too many variables on pricing. The forum is super helpful, but depending on where you live you might feel like you're getting hosed.

My local dealer also seriously low-balled my trade in. They offered $15K which was significantly below the KBB trade in value. Happily, my CA told me to go to CarMax, which I immediately did, and they offered $21K which was a couple of grand more than I would have taken from BMW. When I dropped the CarMax quote on his desk he felt embarrassed (and rightly so). What a huge difference. All together I am feeling good about the whole thing.

Anyway, I am really excited - I placed the order yesterday for a fully loaded M40i with PCD hopefully the first week of April. I can't wait to hit the Tail of the Dragon on my way home.

Don't be too hard to yourself! All deals are local, unless you are willing to get into buying long distance without a chance to see the car (let alone test drive) before signing on the dotted line...

My deal was similar to yours, and was less than the 'best' deals posted here. However, I bought local in a smaller market in the Midwest where competition is less fierce (only 2 BMW dealerships around) and it's harder to deal. Besides, an extra few % off is not such a big deal in the long run anyway, as long as you get the satisfaction of owning the car, and knowing that the dealership is only a short drive away should you need to go back for anything.

Enjoy the ride!

Glad to hear! As I said in another post, enjoy the car and don't try too hard and beat yourself up if you can't match what some others did from a thousand miles away! There is no need to be the Haggling Champion of this forum!

I also custom ordered mine so I knew that I would never get the same type of deal choosing from dealer's lot.

Good luck with the wait, and enjoy the PCD process! The trip home will be a very nice way to accumulate those break in miles!

Yeah, you're so right. Expecting to get the same deal in Indianapolis (with one BMW dealer) as you might get in the New York area is totally unrealistic. Custom vs off-the-lot will also not be the same. Getting worked up over a few hundred bucks on a car with MSRP in the 60K+ range doesn't make sense.

I did PCD for my old M4 back in 2015 and it was great, but I had to skip the factory tour and the off-roading portions, so I'm really looking forward to doing those this time. And the drive home through the Smokey Mountains... THAT is as good the PCD experience.

Last question, was this a vehicle off of the lot or a custom build?

Been getting some pretty bad numbers lately for the X4

Thanks
