35d jet plane noise, sounds like we're in an airport

We were at about 60mph. It sounded like there was an airplane overhead or next to us. It didn't change with road speed or engine speed. It stopped suddenly after a bit, then returned a bit later, then went. Didn't seem to be linked to the climate control. Wound the window down and it was very loud from outside. any thoughts?
