Thanks for sharing, Anthony. If you only have a few minutes to watch this 17'32" video, scroll to the 15'40" mark to hear his positive commentary.

Speed enforcement is a billion dollar business for municipalities, insurance companies, politicians and the press. So I won't expect them to give it up any time soon.

As Nitrium mentioned, Dzo, there are a fair number of reasons folks may wish for the added power and performance, even though they may never realize the top end so often shown overseas. Trailer hitch and needing to tow without the option for a diesel here in the US (and still wishing for the G01 and not another Mnfr's offerings) is one that comes to mind. And especially if going up a grade.
And our reason, to be honest, is to have that confidence on Interstate travels that if I need that quick power input to manuever in a tightly congested and fast-moving situation I will have that. Arguments can and have been made as to whether one should be able to anticipate situations early enough so that such is not needed, but my concern has been (and remains) the distracted driver. And when travelling at Interstate speeds in a congested setting with near bumper-bumper fast traffic (what ever happened to the car length for every 10 miles per hour... ), and coming up to an on-ramp - I want to have the ability to anticipate problems and then quickly avoid by passing if needed. I have been in situations in which braking is not an option with someone on my backside and we're in the middle lane travelling 79mph. And since the crowded fast lane is going 85-90mph I need to be able to quickly slide in without causing an accident in that lane. It has already happened to us and our G01 responded beautifully. Attached is the time and distance needed for such an exercise with the G01 X3 30i, M40i, and the upcoming X3M (if provided 490HP) in the simulation (with its inherent assumptions). I'm also showing a snippet of the spreadsheet from which that data is derived just to share the documentation. [Ignore the highlighted cells as they was for earlier analyses on qtr mile times.] Note this is extracted from the acceleration simulation so that implies full bore acceleration, and does not account for human/vehicle reaction time which would extend those variables. |

Lots of folks enjoy spirited jumps from 50 - 85 mph, even if it isn't strictly speaking within the suggested speed parameters for a given road. In my m235i, the ability to pass rapidly when folks are cruising at 50 feels so different from what I've experienced in our 4 cylinder X3, it almost feels like a superpower. Well worth 5-6k extra to get superpowers, in my opinion.

What a pretentious jerk. Wha, Wha about the stiff steering and interior badge. Don't say "no one wants these" like you represent all BMW owners....and watch out for bikers next time while playing with the iDrive at 150km.
