Tire Wear

I have the Conti 6's on my X3Mc, and 6,000 miles of mostly highway use. Looks like new tread depth is 9/32". When I brought the car in for my annual service, the tech measured + or - 6/32" on the four tires. In other words, around 50% worn. Does this sound right to you?

Pictures for reference would help. Inside edge of tires tends to wear slightly more than middle on cars with higher camber specs. 6/32 is still a lot of tread

Sounds right.
Conti tread rating is low, Michelin’s are a bit better.
At 6k my contis were more than 50% worn.

My old X5m pirellis had low tread wear ratings, I needed new rear tires every 10k miles.

If you want a little better wear I would switch to Michelin ps4 and go wider. 295 rears and 265 fronts. Less stress vs the narrow stock tires. Tires are not working as hard.

I just changed out this on my X3m but on my F80 I switched out stock 275 to 295s and the tires gave me much more traction and lasted 25-30% longer vs stock.

I already had the Contis on my previous SQ5 8R TDI an was absolutly disappointed by its tire wear.

As my main daily road is very curvy and i always tend to drive more "sporty", they didn't pass more than 7-8k km.

Had Pirellis before (and OEM were Dunlops) and even with them I made around 10-12k.

So I'm not surprised that the Contis aren't doing better on the X3MC. I currently made 4000 km with it on the X3MC and my guess is the won't last more then 8k either.

This may be a stupid question but is it okay to go with wider tyres on the stock rims? How does that work? Surely they’re too big?

I'm also suffering from horrible wear. I took my car into the garage on Monday and was told that my tread is down to 1.6mm from 7mm! I'm 6600 miles in! Atrocious, I've contacted continental about this

I'm considering the MP4S All Season next, does anyone suggest anything else?

I'm jumping on new PS 4 all season this week. a lot people stating an improvement in ride and comfort. I considered also pirelli zero all season plus. very good reviews about them. and I considered to go with 265 40 and 295 35 but 295 are out of stock now at tirerack. so I went with stock sizes got ps4 all season.

Yes they fit on stock 21 wheels.

They are the same size as merc glc63s 21 wheels with a different offset, but they do not rub. Do a search and you will see plenty of people have done this already.

Just to show my lack of knowledge of these tires, I used to think that 3/32" was about minimum safe tread depth. Any thoughts on whether that's still appropriate on these tires?

Thanks for all the help. I'll try to get a picture up later today.

Thanks, the Conti's I have at the moment are just terrible, I actually get tyre slippage too when turning a corner from a stop in the rain (and trust me, I am being light footed about this)

A shame I can't find the MPS4 AS in the uk in 21yet, has anyone in the uk found anyone that stocks these yet?

Looks like 2/32" is the legal minimum, but 4/32" is recommended by TireRack and 6/32" if you are in snow (which these tires never should be).

I changed my conti's to MPS4S on summers and MPS4AS on winters and they both have a very noticeable longer tread wear difference. The conti's wore down too fast for me after a few thousand miles and I also had slippage while cornering. smh

Picked up my new PS4 A/S tires today. Should have them on in a week. Looking forward to the comparison with the Conti stockers.

my Contis were done after 10K miles. Fastest set of tires I've gone through ever. The Pirelli Scorpion A/S Plus have been a pleasant surprise for an all around performer.

Whats the difference like between the two in terms of handling, comfort and noise? or are they pretty much the same?

Funny story about "tire karma". Had the PS4 A/S tires at home waiting to be installed next week. Go out to the car today, and the driver side rear Conti is dead flat. I guess it was pissed at me... Anyway, got a warranty flatbed tow to the BMW dealer, and they will be installing all four new tires tomorrow!

The difference between the two are the summers are for the best for higher speeds, tighter cornering for track use. The AS is more of a daily driver, treadwear is almost doubled, excellent for all elements rain, snow, mud and can still hold it's own for speed and temp!! For me, I noticed the ride feels softened also. I will ride these AS until June because I like them a lot!!

Thanks! Really wish the UK would stock these. I'm going o hold out for the AS in 21's, Im down to 3mm on the Conti's so at this rate of burn I believe I have about 3-4 months left before I need to change them

Pretty close to our experience with my wife's X3MC, although we got to that around 8K miles.

I know you're referencing the PS4 vs PS4AS, but to share reasoning behind our new tire choice - my wife was getting frustrated with the Contis' noise and harsh ride which seemed to be worsening as she had more miles. I began noticing it as well during our long trips. When they were new I didn't sense much difference c/w my Michelin PS4s, but definitely seemed more noticeable as the miles accumulated. This was despite even lowering them to 32F/35R.

So when researching, I saw the following: Conti Treadwear (T)240, Traction (tr) A; Michelin PS4 T300/tr AA; and Michelin PS4AS T540/tr A.

As I have about 10.5K miles on my PS4 with still about 6-7mm left, I'm not worried about the treadwear, and with the OEM PS4 having the highest traction - we chose those. We do a lot of Interstate travel and with wet roads wished to have the highest rating for that aspect.

Really quite remarkable the difference - she really has noted substantial improvement in her ride, and I've got to admit how surprised I am as well.
