What are oil change intervals?
My car is dinging that I need an oil change soon. It states the following:
in 3800 miles August 2020. So which is it? In August or in 3800 miles? I am under the mileage by a large margin. It's a lease so I don't want to get dinged. I think I did the Run in service about 3 or 4 months ago so it's not like it's been a year since the oil change. |

The counter starts as of the "in service date"
Check with your service dept on what that date was. It could have been last summer and the car could have sat if you bought one off the lot. Either way it's the date or mileage. Whichever comes first. |

Don't they change the oil at the Run in service? I would assume that would reset all the counters.

On a new ///M car you end up getting two oil changes within the first 12 months. |

Seems normal I guess. Our X3MC went into service May5, run-in service performed mid-June at 1100 miles. We are now getting the same message:
In 7000 miles Or August 2020 perform oil change. We are at 2,518 miles. |

Dropping mine off tomorrow for it's first service past the run-in, according to the car I'm 90 miles overdue and I'm a bit over 7,800 miles.

Really confused on this subject. In-service date I always understood starts when the new car is sold/registered, not car built date. My x3m was built on 11/2019, sold new 6/2020 and I have my RIS scheduled for next week. I look into my car service schedule and I see my first oil change is scheduled for 11/2020 or 7000mi. I would assume to be around 3k mi. in November. Since when did BMW set service dates/time when car is dropped to dealerships? Make no since...

The service counter starts on the in service date (day it got PDId at the dealer). For example. Car hits the dealer on 11/2019. Nobody buys it and it sits on the lot. On 11/2020 it would still get an oil change because it is due by time, even if it has not moved 1 ft. It has nothing to do by the date of sale. |

Mine got reset during the break in service. I'm at 5200 miles and it's telling me the next scheduled service is in 6000 miles.

I am just a 100 or so miles post RIS and I seem to recall a number of people stating they had oil issues after their RIS to do with levels. Wish it just had a sodding dip stick like in the old days! |

The car by default will give you a the estimate date and mileage, whichever comes first. It is, however, condition based and automatically adjust based on operating conditions.
