Air Con on when not selected

I like fresh air and often have the sunroof open.

I noticed last night that the vents were blowing out cold air. The AirCon switch was off and the Auto button was not selected.

It was very humid and warm (22deg), i wondered if there is some sort of automatic backup where it puts the AirCon on to prevent dampness in the Car or such like.
Has anyone else experienced this ?

handbook states if you have the ventilation set to Auto then it will switch on your A/C if needed.

Yes.

I also like to pop the sunroof, lower the windows, and leave the hvac on low fan only to bring in fresh air. I've owned a 2014 228i, a 2016 X3, and currently own a 2018 X3 and 2020 M340i. All of them exhibit this behavior of running the AC at startup and even occasionally whenever even when AC is set to off. AFAIK, it's a BMW thing. Just ignore it. After 3-4 minutes the compressor should stop.

I questioned my SA about it long ago on the 228i and just as you mentioned, i was told the HVAC system will override the manual AC off if it detects excess humidity in the cabin. I think I read somewhere that you can code this behavior away.

One of the few weird BMW quirks that I dislike. Every other brand of car I've owned obeys when I don't ask for AC.

Thanks Delta5 !
It seemed odd and I searched extensively and couldnt find anything. Would be interested in the coding out option.
