Potential Software-Related Recall/TSB

Just took my car in this morning to get some rattles and sounds checked out as well as get a post break in oil change but it looks like I came out with more than expected!

I thought something was strange when the SA was going over my paperwork and i saw the words "RECALL" in highlighter on the papers. I didn't bother asking him about it as we were out the door trying to replicate the various rattles I had.

Later in the afternoon I get an update regarding the rattles and the SA mentions that the car is getting a software update.

Few hours later, the SA calls and says that the car had issues with one of the modules when updating the software and that they need to switch out a new gear selector. Problem is, its on backorder for 4-5 weeks cause "this might be a widespread issue" but I can drive away today and we'll set up another appointment once the new part comes in.

I pick up the car and see these interesting notes in the paperwork. Can anyone decipher? Seems like there's some sort of a recall/TSB out there and somehow updating that mess-up my gear selector? I asked the SA for specifics but he said that BMW doesn't tell them either and that my car is safe to drive.

Does anyone on here have any details or have had a similar experience?

Thanks!

Current events for me, somewhat related:

The bmw /updates website says there are no outstanding recalls for my car.
Nevertheless, as part of the process of prepaying the balance on my BMW financing (used to get a discount), I am told that there is an issue getting the lien off my title until I get a recall resolved (at no cost). Something about a Service Bulletin. The serial number of the campaign seems to be the same as yours. We'll see how it goes next Wednesday, I guess.

Same here. I scheduled my first oil change next week and was advised of a software recall. I've heard bmw has patched the ability to flash the dme. I'm concerned I won't be able to reflash BM3 when I get the car back.

Interested to hear how it goes for you guys and hopefully it goes smoothly.

Wondering what the reason for the recall was. I don’t think it was done on mine given the issues they were having with the GWS but I have not noticed any notable difference aside from the fact that my sport individual settings and 1-7 preset memory was lost

Hi,
Sounds like they are locking down the DME ECU to prevent people from making coding changes to their cars?
Cheers

happened to me today. I was in for re-application of my Auto-butler only and was advised for B122019 delivery stop: program control unit (dme) b1220219 and they have to check my x3. It has been more than 6 hrs now and I still don’t have my car back. I don’t know what is this about if anyone has an idea?

I just called my SA at the dealership and asked him exactly what it's for:

The DME's onboard diagnostic function will miscalculate sometimes causing an erroneous CEL.

Said it may take an hour, sometimes a day depending on the vehicle. Software can crash during an update so they have to keep it there until it's updated correctly.

Hope this helps. Mine also has to go in for DME update as well.

I just got a message from my SA, they completed servicing my car and they said the B122019 DME is a “programming update to the DMe”. I do not even know what is DME. He said it’s a main onboard computer of the vehicle.

Thanks, this is helpful! I'm wondering why it crashes so often/if this crashing is what busted my "GWS control module." Oddly the gear shifter still works just fine.

Could be a revised version of this TIB. Related to engine oil not being displayed on a small number of G01, G02 and G30 produced between 6/28/18-11/17/18. If so, a delivery stop would be ordered to update iStep on these cars to avoid engine damage due to consumers not knowing engine oil status.

Does updating this wipe any codings or carplay changes you’ve made?

I just had my 2019 X3 M40i (production date in October 2018) in for the first service on 6/21. My SA (who I have a very good and long-standing relationship with), did not mention any recalls and the paperwork does not show any recall work done. The BMW website is also not showing any open recalls for my vehicle?

Also, no software update was performed (he said they no longer do software updates unless it's necessary for some reason). Any thoughts?

BMW website does not list the recall. Ask him to run your VIN. If you don't have any software recalls then I guess you're one of the lucky ones

Just checked with my SA and he responded that my 2019 X3 M40i (October 2018 build) is not included in the recall. No other info to report.

I noticed my ambient lighting has changed and the 1-7 memory key were erased.

DME in BMW speak is Digital Motor Electronics. So your SA was correct.

Texted my SA today with my VIN. Asked him if there was a software related recall impacting my 2019 X3 M40i, which I picked up on April 11, 2019. He responded that, yes, there is such a recall impacting my vehicle. I have an appointment for Monday, July 1st, to drop off my vehicle. We will see what transpires.

What happened is there was a programming recall to update the Vehicle. It was a delivery stop recall. Done on almost everything from 3 4 5 7 series as well as X cars. Sometimes during programming a module can crash. If the vehicle is under warranty warranty covers this. This bad thing in your situation is your vehicle is fairly new and GWS shifters don't get replaced often and there's likely no stock in the USA for it. May need to come from Germany. I would not worry about anything. The dealer will call you and have you return and program it again and everything will be great again.

When I took delivery of my X3 X30i this past weekend, they said that they had issues with updating the software because it kept crashing. That's why it took some time for me to get the vehicle after I closed on the deal. Maybe they were doing this.
