Real-world highway MPG
What are you guys seeing for real-world driving on the highway at, say, 70 mph and just cruising? I'm curious as to the max range of the X3 M on a road trip.

yeah, you'll have to exercise scientific discipline if you drive nice and easy, what mpg do you get?

I did a 550 mile road trip one way and then back for Thanksgiving with winter tires on and 2,000 total miles got the fuel economy to 17.9 mpg with a range of 340 miles. Cruise was set to 75 mph.

I think it would be hard for me to get over 20.
I'm averaging like 14mpg combined with about 50/50 split city/hwy now.

There is enough confusion with UK vs US gallons without you posting "Litres per 100km"....

For my first 1,000 miles I've been averaging 17.4 miles per gallon per my Fuelly app. This is a mix of city and highway driving.

The X3 M40i on cruise around 70 mph gets about 30 mpg (at least for me).
The M and M40i are basically the same weight and aerodynamic shape (except the M doesn't have dynamic grill vents). So why is the X3 M less efficient? |

23% less mpg but 43% more power seems a fair swap.

Moving the same mass at the same velocity in the same medium for the same amount of time uses the same amount of energy. He is asking the right question, and I honestly don't have a great answer. The X3M uses a ton more gas to accomplish the same feat. Sound? Heat? I dunno where the gas goes. |

Is RPM in 8th at 70ish mph different between M40i and the M? Is there active boost at that speed on flat ground? That's the only thing that I can think of that would account for the substantially different mpg.

Compression ratio has a huge effect on engine efficiency
40i 11.0:1 Vs 3M 9.3:1 3M is built for big boost. Tuning will be awesome on the engine

Wills2, he is in US MPG, UK will be 25MPG. I find the fuel consumption for the M40i and X3M to be roughly the same.. I can get 25-26MPG at 70MPH on motorway without trying too much.
On the X3M UK Group, one guy posted an average of 20MPG for the M40i, which is similar to what I am getting. |

TBH i am coming from 640D which was averaging 30mpg... so 25 if i try hard or 21-22 if I don`t try? It`s just great, considering the weight power etc... I would say maaaaximum 10% difference between the x3m and x3m40i.
22.5 is a right number! |

On my test drive I did notice this, car wanted 7th gear till 65/70MPH !!!, this to me was down to LOW torque, put me off the car a bit, however this was X4M which just got in my Garage I think the X3M is an inch or more narrower so going to try that one out early next year.Car does like the fuel though, I nursed it too 25 MPG, and then drove normal and got 20MPG just, this is low compared to my F90 M5 CP with gives 24/25 MPG normal with some booting.
