Don't forget to clean the drains 2x times a year with this, it will save you a lot of time and money for about $6.

Appropriate Krytox oil/grease depending on what it’s applied to. Also Gummi Pflege on seal (BMW has its own branded version).

Some info here on diagnosing issues etc https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...06684-9999.pdf

Where are the drain holes in BMW's? Is it in the back corner?

At the front and back sides of the roof cassette.

It’s easy to see the front drain exit near the door tension bar, but the rear exits appear hidden.

Thanks. Once you find the hole does the brush push through smoothly or are there some twist and turns to be careful about. Don't want to force it and break the pipe mid stream

Basically it bends as per the diagram and is push fit connected to the cassette. Hence, undue pressure on a blockage or snag on a bend can disconnect the push fit connector or split the tube.

According to BMW ISTA, BMW will not attempt to replace the front tubes unless the car is undergoing significant accident repair work, so be real careful.

I’ll stick with Krytox as for the tiny amount required it’s not expensive, something like £5 for 105 oil.

Traffic noise, pollution, rain and extreme weather temperatures are all barriers to having the sunroof open and enjoying the ride. In my case with all the cars that I owned I would open it once or twice a year at best. This is one item I would love to have as an option when ordering, not only for the above reasons but also for structural rigidity and saving a couple of grand to be used elsewhere.
On the other hand I can understand the need for a convertible as a second vehicle to enjoy on weekends with the top down.
So how often do you guys use your sunroof and what are the + and -‘s

The pano roof lets in lots of light, which lifts the cabin, particularly for rear passengers, and it’s also great at night, even if you never open the front section.

I wonder if the new X3 will come with the iX style switchable glass roof. Perhaps the way forward considering they can't seem to make a pano roof that doesn't make some kind of noise for the masses :-)

So I guess when I looked at the picture of the drain in a previous post I missed a key alternate drain feature.

Backstory -
I typically open my moon/sunroof a couple of times a year, and the car is garaged 90% plus of the time so I wasn't too worried about the drains being plugged. I had to do my spouse's Q5 today as a part of its inspection, so I opened the roof and very slowly poured about a pint of water into the passenger side track area. I watched it pour out from the underside. Repeated on the other side of the car. No problems. Tracks were fairly clean with 2 yrs 25k on the odo.

Then I got the (not so) bright idea to try mine. I poured about 8oz on the driver's side and saw it coming out below the door seal. I happened to have the passenger door open and repeated. I discovered the drain hole. Cool. I also discovered it coming out from the A-pillar trim as well. I went back and looked at the driver's side and I saw the same thing. 8 oz of water in a heavy rain is not a ton of water. I've also done this on my Subarus and my previous F31 / F25 BMWs w/o this happening.

At this point since its symmetrical, I'll call it an advanced BMW feature / auxiliary drain.

Is that a good fit? It looks a tad bigger than the draiin holes. I am considering getting one too, but want to be sure. How is it working for you?

Did that push through easily for you? I've heard warning that all the turns and angles are push on elbows and if you push that through with too much force you can disconnect the drain part way. Very expensive to fix since it involves a lot of disassembly.

It works perfect, I think the brush heads are all about the same size.

This is how small the small the brush head is, and it has a super gentle spring that connects the brush head to the coated cable. This allows the head to swivel easily without snagging anything. I doubt the dealership has anything different, maybe compressed air, but at what pressure?
