Comfort Access Question

Hello!

Back in November my wife and I decided to pick up a 2017 X3 - Brand new and very nicely equipped (M-Package, Comfort Access, X-Drive, etc...)

One of the features advertised for her car was the ability to open the tailgate with her foot (Little tag on her kay and in the manual) - this hasnt worked since we got the car and while in for service today she mentioned it and the dealer told my wife today that she had the "Light" version of comfort access and that while although her car does in fact have comfort access, it is not the version that allows you to open the tailgate with your foot. So basically it will do everything you expect form comfort access, EXCEPT open the tail gate...

I asked her to get the build sheet from them for her car to show exactly which options her car had and for them to point out/explain the options that was for comfort access "Light" compared to the version that allows the lift gate to be opened with your foot. They were unable to do so and said that there was not an option code that they could provide her with to show the differences... Seems odd to me.

I have never heard of this before and cant find any information on it - is this a such thing where there are varying degrees of comfort access and one version to include the rear tailgate feature vs a version that doesn't include it?

Thanks in advance!

I'm no BMW option expert but to my knowledge there is only one version of what Comfort Access is and I don't think that includes a foot-option for the rear door.

Keep telling her to wave her foot under there though, is that not funny?

It's funny you say that - she sent a video of the BMWtechs doing it - 4 grown men standing behind her car kicking back and forth underneath it

From the 2017 pricing guide:

"Note: hands-free trunk opening feature not available with ZMM"

ZMM is the M Sport Package. I have a vague recollection that the M Sport bumper was not compatible with the hands-free trunk opening feature of Comfort Access.

Enter the last 7 characters of the VIN into the BMWVIN website and you will get a report of everything the X3 was built with. I don't know if there will be any reference to the missing hands-free feature though.

This is exactly correct - the M-sport bumper obstructs the "view" of the sensor, so they simply didn't equip the car with the feature. I knew this when we bought our '17, but it was fun to watch the Genius Bar guy try and fail to demonstrate it when he gave my wife her walk-through at delivery.

Can it be retrofitted to the X3? Anyone have any info on how it works?

I own a z4 as well - these guys are less than "smart" about anything other than setting up iDrive for new customers, and even that is questionable. 3 guys worked an issue around our profile settings in the X3....

Haha, I had 2 Genius guys at the dealership try to open my hatch too! After much research, I found out the M-sport package included a bumper that was not compatible with the "hands free" feature.
