'19 M40i exhaust compared to '18

Did they nerf the exhaust on the '19 X3 M40i?

It just sounds more muffled and has less snarl.

The '18 sounded almost as good as the 340i MPPSK (my previous car).

The '19, to me, sounds half as loud. Pops and bangs on the overrun, sure, but while the RPMs are climbing, it's quieter.

The exhaust is really my only let-down with the X3 M40i, and only because my previous car had such a great exhaust.

I had an 2018 M40i and now a 2019 M40i. The exhaust sounds exactly the same. Now for the 2020 M40i, some have reported that the sound is more muted.

interesting... so it's all my head. i suppose it's no surprise that youtube videos are not the best way to judge exhausts.

i think the M40i exhaust sounds great under load - e.g. real acceleration. Sitting in a garage the revs don't sound that great.

I guess it could be possible that the 2019 has a quieter cabin due to better insulation or sills over the previous generation 2018? Who's knows lol

Whether the specific vehicle has acoustic glass will make a big difference too. That glass is incredible at muting noise.

In the UK the difference is huge. 2018 model had pop and bangs and a louder exhaust note. The 2019 model has the PPF (petrol particulate filter) fitted which has killed 50% of the sounds.

I was hugely dissapointed when I picked up my 2019 after watching loads of youtube videos of the 2018. Especially as I came from an M240i with the mufflers deleted.

I suppose I could get an ER catted downpipe... but I swore after all the $$$ I spent modding my 340 that I wouldn't spend a dime extra on the M40i.... must.... resist....

Garage List
I had a demo 2018 and now my ordered 2019. They sound mostly similar. The only thing is I found the 18 Demo would crackle and pop during startup when in Sport Plus. Mine roars but does not crackle during startup, regardless of mode. Pops plenty during overruns and downshifts but just not during startup. Only difference I've noticed. Mine only has 5k on the clock though, so guessing that could change with time.
