F90 M5 or X4M
Hello all,
I'm in a bit of a bind right now. I'm just about to sign what I think is a killer deal for a X4MC, BUT with Oct came some better residuals for the 19 M5's. Without getting into too much info, we're looking at around 100-120 more a month between a 117K 2019 M5C vs a 85K 2020 X4MC. The last 4 cars I've been in over 12 years have been: e60 550i, MB e550 coupe (don't ask), F10 550i, and now a F06 650i GC. Love my V8 sedans as you can see. I've always contemplated getting into a M5 but got great deals on all my prior BMWs when shopping around. Hopefully there can be some people here that have owned/own both and can chime in. Will I get regretful for getting into the X4MC over the M5. I'm in and out of my trunk everyday and have my rear seats dropped 80% of the time to expand my cargo space. This was one of my main reasons the X4MC appealed to me, easier access and more space. Hoping the I6 and decrease in torque won't bother me too much as well. I'm actually looking forward to having a shorter car to zip around town in. My 650I GC's length barely fits in my garage. Any insight would be appreciated. AND waiting on the 2020 X5M or X6M isn't much an option. Not one to spend 1500 on a lease payment. Thanks! |

Raw power, great sound with just an Xpipe mod, great handling, AWESOME interior M5. Pure stock 11.2 at 125mph at my elevation. I would still own it if the Porsche Turbo S did not exist. Awesome vehicle. X3MC, great handling, smaller footprint, great storage vs a trunk, nice interior, decent sound, rides slightly tighter than a M5 nonComp. Pure stock 11.7 at 119mph at my elevation. Comes down to what you want. |

M5 is a no brainer for ~$100/mo difference.
However, based on your usage of clearly needing large trunk/cargo space perhaps the suv would suit your specific needs better. |

I haven't owned either, just having owned a couple X5 50i. I just recently attended the M Track Day. After drag racing the X3MC and X4MC, I was disappointed in its initial launch vs the M5 comp I took on the track for multiple follow the leader laps.
In my opinion, the M5 is the way to go, even with the lack of utility you might need. |

To OP, could X5M be under consideration as well?
To SuperTee, what was specifically less than attractive about X4M suspension? |

It is way too hard in comfort.. I was just bumping around on the road.. Maybe fun to have some fun.. But it started to get annoying after 30 Minutes. I had a M4 Convertible for 3 years, much better comfort in comfort mode.. Also my X6M feels much better (although this might comes from the amazing seats it has). Also drove the M40i straight after the X3M and the M40i is much better.
What I've learned from the test rides: I'll go for a X4 M40i or a M550d Touring. How ever, just my opinion. I'd rather buy a used M4 and a used X3 20d ... Same money, much more fun and much more comfort, just pick the car you need.. |

Amazing how subjective the comfort reviews are..... Coming from an M40i with adaptive suspension and optional 21s, I've put about 300 miles on my new F97 on my daily roads, and my impression is that it's more taunt in comfort than my previous M40i but not excessively. Yes, I am not isolated from every imperfection of the road, yet I already feel more ready to affront the curvy road ahead (which I have a lot of here in Northern Italy). Is it excessive for a daily driver? Not for my taste, but I've come to appreciate here in this forum that it's a very individual feeling. Are you looking for a family cruiser without any feedback as to the road surface beneath you? This is not the car for you. Go non M or or X5 (non M) if your family is large. Otherwise, I really agree with a recent review of the F9Xs which stated this is the X3MC for those with only room (or wallet) for a single vehicle which will meet all their sporting and family needs........

Thanks for all the info and suggestions. Of course based on pure performance I would pick a M5, but that's not all I need for my daily. Having the last 4 out of 5 cars being large sedans, decided I needed a change and am going with the X4MC. Thanks onfireX5 I think you're observations spoke to me the most. Going to take a chance on this car as I don't think I'll be disappointed. Thanks all.

Well....guess I’m going to bump this thread from the forum vault. As you can see, I did choose the X4MC over the M5. But after a year of ownership, ended up back where I started but picking the other option. It was fun, just wasn’t working for me as a daily driver. On to see if this one works a lot better. Drove from San Diego to LA just now in it. And night and day difference in terms of comfort. But without sacrificing anything. Trunk space I think is even better because the X4Ms sloping rear didn’t allow me to put tall stuff. Thise same boxes sit inside the trunk no problem. Who’d thunk it???

In what areas did the F98 fail to meet your expectations? Can’t go wrong with the “OG’ ///M5

Oh man, where do I start. Before the X4MC I owned a e60 550i, f10 550i, f06 650i GC, and a MB e550 Coupe. So you can see I've enjoyed V8s. The X4MC just didn't have enough low end torque to make it a smooth rider when you weren't running and gunning. When I did drive it spirited, it felt like a VERY stable and QUICK car for its size and ride height. But in LA, you not doing a lot of the latter.
Suspension just didn't work for me. Its way too stiff. I know a lot of owners like it that way and came from M3/M4's I didn't. My GF had a 15 911 GTS and it felt as stiff as that, but even worse cause of it's ride height. After a year, sharp bumps and dips just made everything rattle. Just not enough insulation and quality. The same roads I've driven in my other BMWs had muted, muffled bangs and thuds. The X4MC was very loud, "rattley" and jarring after a year. Trunk space on the X4MC was lacking. Unlike the X3, the sloping roof prevented using the space efficiently. Even when taking out the roof deck and window cover. Had to drop the seats down frequently which I thought I wouldn't do with the car. So pretty much the powerband and suspension just killed it for me. I'm getting better gas mileage in my M5 because I don't have to be in sport plus mode d2 to be able to move the car at a whim. And I had MSS springs, and KW's would probably make the ride better, but the chassis stiffness might not ever allow it to get to a level of comfort I want. AND with this car, you're likely going to get some sort of creaking, wear, popping at some point. And if you do decide to add some springs, coilovers for comfort, I can guarantee the dealership will always blame any sound, issue, wear on that mod. No thanks. So after a year, couldn't imagine what I would be another year later. Used car market is great now, and it happened to be a situation when my lease buy out was equal to what my trade in was valued. So decided to get out without incurring a loss. |

I cross-shopped M5 with X3M because I needed space (interiors are identical) and both boots are big. Since neither car you're considering is an SUV, then M5.

I had a similar quandary but going from an M550i to the X3M just last week.
EDIT based on just reading the whole thread and the OP went for the X4M but back to the M5. There's no question you missed the low end torque of the V8. Although I've only briefly driven the M5, but the M550i had amazing power from 1500-1800 RPM. At least the X3M readily downshifts and gets you to the needed 2500 RPMs. I'm not past break-in and haven't fully explored top end power. It should be similarly quick to the M550i (obviously not to the M5 level). I got the X3M for its looks over the X4M and the additional utility that's already paid off picking up a microwave oven. Plus the price and lease deal was great. The ride is definitely firm compared to the M550i, and probably more firm than the base M5 but with 20s, its acceptable in NC area roads. I'll miss the added features of the 5 series but you can get the X3M/X4M nicely equipped. Although mine off the lot doesn't have active cruise. I'll also miss the MPG, dropping from 30 highway MPG to the low 20s. The price to pay for an M.

If you are used to v8tt torque you will likely despise your X4MC. Its fast, but only when driving like you stole it. The M5 feels confident and powerful all the freakin time in any context.
