I own two G01s; an MY18 30i and an MY19 M40i.

I think it's time to start a thread listing the manufacturing defects in these cars. I believed BMW when it said that Spartanburg (it's largest plant in the world) produces world-class quality vehicles.

I have $125K worth of current BMWs that put the lie to that claim. Here's my list of issues; please add yours. I've seen lots of posts with build quality issues but a consolidated list might help us uncover the most common ones and help newbies considering buying a BMW G0lemon.

On my 30i
=> goo seeping from the headliner where it meets the front windshield

On my M40i
=> misaligned hood, off center and too far forward
=> burned out LEDs on steering wheel
=> built without cargo cover strap to hold up cover
=> software bug that randomly leaves headlights on overnight.

I should mention that these two G01s are my third and fourth BMWs. The previous two were 3 Series, both were built in Munich and were European Deliveries. They were perfect and what made me a BMW fanboy.

These G01s have cured me of that.

BMW, like all manufacturers have let quality control roll downhill.
If you're lucky, you may get a decently assembled vehicle from any of them.
My previous 2018 X3 M40i, was nearly perfect. This 2019 X3 M40i, not so much.
I remember my old 2010 M3 Coupe, which obviously was built in Germany, had the fenders with unequal gaps between the hood and fenders. Simple fix by just loosening the fender bolts and setting the gap properly, but you would think they would have caught that before the vehicle left the factory. Actually, they should have caught it before it went to paint. And the BMW pre delivery centers in this country aren't any better at spotting problems.

Unfortunately, it's a luck of the draw.

The issues you describe seem to have happened after the vehicle was manufactured and possibly have simple remedies except for the headlight problem which should be reported to the service department.

For comparison, I haven't found similar defects in my 2019 M40i after driving 1,300 miles and spending two weekends detailing every inch of the vehicle. The only thing I found was a very tiny amount of silicon sticking out between the headliner and the roof in the trunk area, and it was easily removed with my fingernail.

Here is a video showing the quality control engineers checking the tolerances of the hood alignment, and another quality control person checks the alignment at the end of the manufacturing process, so BMW definitely tries to ensure the panels are aligned correctly. I suspect something happened to the aliment of your hood after the vehicle left the factory.

I saw the car come off the truck. It was made that way -- badly.

Ask a BMW dealer next time you're in for service about quality issues. You'll get an earful.

If you think about the most likely explanation, the misalignment happened during transit. The vehicles are under a lot of stress during transport on the trucks, especially during loading and unloading when the vehicles are put at very steep angles they rarely see during driving conditions.

Sorry to hear it. That sucks. Hope that BMW will make it right. My M40 has not experienced anything negative and appears very well built and solid.

I have seen zero problems or defects with my BMW. It's my first one and I bought it in May.

1. Creak from the joint between driver's seat base and backrest - as soon as I mentioned, the SA acknowledged that it's a known issue and is a quick fix.
Something very minor...but never expected from a 7-8 month old BMW.

2. Ambient lighting - there's a thread here for this, and by now we all know it's a common issue. SA back in April said it's a physical damage and it's not covered under warranty. Now I can push back, but from the postings in that thread, it sounds like even the replacements are having problems, and I'm not entirely convinced to push back. My car is leased anyway, and I can live with how it is.

3. Car steers to the left when the steering wheel is exactly in the centre, and I had the wheel alignment at the same dealer just 2 months ago. Technician confirmed ( ) is loose (I think something to do with the steering wheel, not the tire wheels) and it can be fixed. Again..this is not even 1 year old, and I drive less than 1,300km per month mostly on suburb roads.

All these issues - I didn't have them in my 13 year ownership of a VW.

I'm sorry to hear all these issues with X3s. Our 2018 m40i has been mostly flawless except for a small rattle from front driver side ( could be stereo related). This is my wife's car which replaced Lexus NX. Now, that car truly gave us zero problems over 3 years. I could tell the differences in build quality between a lexus and a bmw. Lexus was boring as hell to drive though. Porsches seem to possess both quality and performance but they cost a lot more. Actually you can get a Macan S for the price of x3 if its smaller size works for you. That's the only way to have bmw listen to their customers- stop buying their products.

Hyundai make an i30. Your G01 is a 30i. Just saying!

Back to the OP, I’ve not had any issues with mine at all.

10 months with our i30, had one scheduled service that included a couple of recalls, but all is well so far (maybe I'd better look a little closer?)

I've owned several; some from Germany and some from from Spartanburg. Most arrived w/o issue and some arrived minor issues. The latter were always sorted out quickly by my dealer.

LOL.

You sound like you're the perfect candidate for an upsell to a Trabant.

It’s not just Spartenburg built cars, my 2.5 year old 3 series was built in Munich and it has had quite a list of problems, although all fairly minor niggles really:

1. Failed suspension ball joint that made very loud squeaking noises.
2. Rear interior reading lights turn on by themselves. (Still hasn’t been fixed after 2.5 years!)
3. Cruise control toggle switch has split and been replaced 3 times
4. Radio/shortcut buttons cracked
5. Two wheels replaced due to corrosion around centre caps
6. M Sport brakes have always squealed like hell
7. Adaptive suspension made clunking noises over speed humps (fixed with lowering springs)
8. Headlight aim was too low from factory
9. Door seals creak like I’m in an old pirate ship (temporarily cured with Gummi Pflege)
10. Passenger door speaker blew

And probably other things I can’t think of right now.
