It's a shame they didn't bump the power for the diesels while they were at it!

C&D scored a 4.5s 0-60 with the 2018 X3 M40i.

Last I heard, BMW was going to stop producing diesel powered cars. If that's true, then I wouldn't expect any further investments into updates.

..but, the B58 is modular and supposed to be able to be either petrol or diesel. I'll cross my fingers for you filthy diesel lovers. ;-)

Dude, man. A little harsh.

Cars are big investments.. esp. at these levels. I can certainly understand the frustration of dropping $65k on a new ride to learn some months later that a better, updated version was available at, essentially, the same price.

Several points.

1. The 2019 model was excellent. I had one. It's still every bit as good today as it was at time of purchase.

2. These updates were rumored since last September... in these forums. Many people chose not to believe, others didn't want to wait, others didn't like the idea of the features. Even a few weeks ago, people didn't want to wait.

3. Increasingly, technology is coming into the automobile. Tech changes happen quickly. The whole self driving aspect will have massive improvements over next 8-10 years. I would hope for improvements every year.

4. I am used to fairly quick updates.. having a 28 year career working with computers. While you keep an eye out for what's coming, mostly you have to work with what's available. A friend recently switched to leasing.. as he doesn't see owning a car for 8+ years again any time soon.

Personally.. I'm still on the fence. I'm very tempted to buy a used 2017 340ix loaded and waiting for actual LCI MY2022. I REALLY wanted the M Sport seats and extended leather option - so disappointed updates going other parts of world but not North America. I will decide which way to go within next week - when I return home.

BMW is just probably rating it closer to the actual hp, whereas for 2018-2019, they underrated it. This was proven by dyno runs. They also brought the 0-60 time closer to reality.
Only a few different 2019 vs 2020 dyno runs would prove it.

This isn't the case though. Its a different engine with a significant power increase.

M340 Dynos are showing the new version continues to be significantly underrated

If you think all things are equal, you haven't been paying attention. There are several changes to the motor that have been pointed out in other threads. Lighter crankshaft, much longer timing chain and a few more things, all of which have the potential to change the engine's characteristics. Any change to an engine can increase or decrease performance and/or fuel efficiency, depending on what is being changed.

I'm happy for you fanboys who giggle like schoolgirls at the thought of shaving 0.2 seconds off the 0-60 time of a friggin' SUV. See if you can use bimmercode to increase the volume of the ASD as well. That'll make it even faster!
Per your previous comment - Acceleration and top speed depend on both horsepower and GEARING, well Gearing is the same and horsepower is different, so all things being equal (gearing be the same or i.e. equal) and horsepower increasing will in fact decrease the acceleration times, hence 4.6 to 4.4... so... game set match

1 foot roll out, depends on how BMW measures their 0-60.

Meh, it's a BMW, we all know it's going to have a premium.
At the end of the day, it's still a car, and we shouldn't be surprised when it gets updated. ESPECIALLY when it's a premium brand. Are we mad when a computer or a phone gets a good refresh a year or two down the line? No, that's life/the life cycle.

How do you know the transmission gearing hasn't changed? And if it hasn't, we didn't know that when I made my comment, did we? I certainly didn't. Once again, you have missed my point. I never said the performance wouldn't be different with the new engine. I only said that you must know MORE than JUST horsepower in order to predict a performance increase. All we knew was that we were expecting a horsepower increase. My comment was meant to educate people not to ASSUME a performance increase without knowing all the facts.

You should know that most cars have updates every single model year. You bought a 2019 LATE in the model year and are now crying that BMW updated the model for 2020? Of course they did. If having the latest and greatest is important to you, why didn't you wait just a few months more and buy a 2020 at the beginning of the model year? Of course, I suppose you'd get pissed off again when the 2021's come out with more improvements. Why is it so hard to be happy with what you have? Relax and never look back.

I'll bet the overwhelming majority are thrilled with their 2019s and have no regrets about not waiting.

Owning BMWs since 1999, I have been keenly aware of always trying to choose the "right" model year as it pertains to always getting LCI. Well I won't be able to wait foer 2022 on this X3 that I plan to purchase for my wife when her current lease expires in Q1 2020, but I sure am glad to be getting the 2020 model year with all the updates. I'm going to build a car now!

Understand your disappointment... I had a 2010 mustang (with the old 4.6) picked up about 6 months before they put the coyote 5.0 in... but that taught me to do my research if that kind of thing was meaningful to me... I knew a new motor was coming, but didn't believe it would have 400+ hp.

In the general section of this forum there is an upcoming model information thread supported by a few key insiders... we have known for quite a while the new motor was coming to the X3 along with Live cockpit/idrive 7. Will be helpful the next time around for anyone planning new bmw.

Updated engine, not just a tune. B58B30M0 -> B58B30O1 The '01' is Technical Update 1.

There are many significant updates including:
  • Integrated Exhaust Header
  • Ligher Crank Shaft
  • Higher Fuel Pressure
  • Single Timing Chain (instead of 2).

Some nay-sayers bawk and suggest these changes are to save $$ and downgrade the engine. I respectfully disagree. I'd rather have a lighter crank. Single timing chain is less weight and less friction. Many other changes too. You can imagine all the minor issues discovered after initial B58 release. They constantly refine to improve.

See: https://bimmerlife.com/2018/11/01/b5...brings-388-hp/
