Wasn't the X4 a known? I thought it was the X3 shrouded in mystery.

Nothing was 'known' per se. X4 showed 355HP even yesterday. Rumors have them both with the newer B58TU01 (382HP) engine.

It's a very good bet, now, however, that the X3 will have same engine.

There's zero reason to believe that the X3 M40i won't have the same engine.

I feel like it's Christmas. By itself, the new engine is not a big deal. Same with Live Cockpit Pro. Same with iDrive 7. But together, they represent a pretty big upgrade for a non-LCI model. Now, adding the M Sport steering wheel to the X4 30i M Package and the M40i's list of standard equipment is a big thing. It was a deal breaker for me for the MY19 model. That's why I waited. But I never expected to get all the other goodies along with it. And crazy as it may seem, my MY20 config has a $200 lower MSRP than the exact same MY19 config.

My local dealer has 53 2020 X3's in stock all the 2.0 4 cylinder model. Not one with the 6. Maybe they are delayed waiting for the new engine

The 30i models began production at the beginning of August. The M40i's production doesn't begin until the beginning of September.

Yep, bits and pieces added together makes it seem like an unofficial and unannounced LCI. I can understand why some are pissed about this. Oh well.

I'm glad I waited too

Good luck with trying to unload those white elephants. Dealers don't want to keep any in stock, but BMW forces them to take one now and then.
