Brakes squealing in reverse, German thing?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
When reversing on a cold or damp day, my brakes will squeal occasionally. It stops if you apply pressure to the peddle and goes away when they are warmed up

This happened on my OEM pads and is happening on my rgsport low dust pads.

I was outside today (cold) and my neighbor has an Audi and it made the exact same noise when backing up as my X3MC.

Makes me wonder, is this a German car thing?

It seems to be normal.

Maybe BMW is preparing or testing for full electric cars? It squeal when reverse so people knows that you are backing up.

Ha ha. They should make the sound in forward too as I almost got hit by a stealth Prius walking in a Costco parking lot!

I've owned several bmw's over the years and the only one that had (some) squeal was my '15 x3. All others, squat, nice & quiet

My brakes squeal in reverse every so often as well...which is ok since I don't reverse very often. Better than my X5M which squealed whenever applying the brakes.

Had plenty of squealing in reverse (and drive) on the stock pads.

The RGsport low dust pads help a lot with noise reduction once they warm up. However, when cold, dry and in reverse, the X3M sounds like a garbage truck coming to a halt.

I don't fault the pads. Just don't think I used enough grease. Ordered some high quality synthetic brake grease and will be disassembling the front brakes to make sure all the metal-to-metal contact points are fully greased, especially where the front pads "rest" inside the caliper housing.

Let me know how that works out. I used the included grease with the RG Sport pads but think I used enough as I used to go overboard with grease on brake jobs.

But hearing an Audi making the EXACT same noise makes me think it is a design flaw with German cars...or “normal” as the dealer would say.

haha... my wife's GLC did that for the first 2 years we owned it.. now somehow it's fine. My X4M also squealed in all directions, for the first 4 months.. now 8 months in, the brakes are quiet as a mouse. Makes no sense.

Bedding the brakes (a series of very hard stops and a cool down period) can often resolve squeaking if it’s from the pads or rotors.

Perhaps over a long period of time a similar transfer of the pad material happens?

I still haven’t t had a chance to do it on my new pads but they have been working great so not a lot of incentive.

How cold were the temp?
I was at New Mexico in December when it gets down to low 40's, it was squealing until it warms up.
I noticed that BMW recently been putting on double sided tape to get the brake pad to stick to the piston.
I think it would be a solution that will fix the squeal while cold and clicking.
It is hard for me to test it here in LA where the temp never dip below 50's.

I've noticed it in low 40's - high 30's.

It happens more often when the car has been sitting outside rather than the slightly warmer garage.

I've also noticed it more when it is more humid (but still cold like a dewy morning).

I've only had it happen in reverse though.

Yea, I noticed that when I am doing testing on my G05 X5 with same brake pad compound.
It wasn't squealing in LA, but when I got there, it was low 40's to 30's. It squeals until it warmed up.
My guess could be the old compound hardening up and not matching up with the new compound.

Do you mean the low dust pads?

I recall this happening on the OEM pads but usually if it rained or after I washed it.

Again, it is only reverse for me and they have not made a peep going forward.

I back out of my driveway- perhaps one day I’ll try backing in and see if it will do it going forward.

Yes, low dust pad that I was testing for G05 X5 market.
