Smoke on start up

I have a 2013 X3 2.0t with about 42,000 miles.
Recently, I have noticed a good amount of smoke on start up.
Seems to only happen after the car sits overnight.

I am scheduled for service next week.

The service people I spoke to seemed to know exactly what the cause was.

How common is this?

Do others have this issue with the 2.0t?

There is probably a leak somewhere. I have had that happen before. I was able to seal the leak with some spray on Flexseal.

We took our '13 for the same issue. Luckily it is under a CPO warranty, since we are at 51,000 miles.

They replaced some parts on the turbo, but it still smokes if it sits for three days or so. I have included a link to a youtube video of the issue.

Next week I plan to make an appointment to have them look at it again.

Cheers

Todd

You have a defective turbocharger shaft seal. You will need an updated turbo oil suplly line and a new turbocharger as well. This is a known N20 issue.

This is a known N20 issue that BMW has issued no recall or less official directives?

It is a gasoline engine. NOT Diesel.

I think they did the Supply line, but not the turbocharger. I will take it back to them and hopefully they get it right.

I am dropping my car off on Thursday night so they can look at it after it sits all night. I will report back.

Q - Any mechanics here - I went online looking for the turbo blue prints.

There is an oil line in the turbo that's leaking? oil to lubricate the fan?

I recently purchased a 2013 x3 28i (F25) and my brother saw smoke when I started it yesterday. Going to have to get it checked out as I have 6k left on the original 50k mile warranty

I have a 2012 2.0i with 60k miles on it and experienced exactly the same symptoms at around 55k.

The dealer first replaced the oil feed pipe (which feeds lubricating oil to the turbo) and tested it for 2 days. When that didn't resolve the issue, they replaced the turbo. All done under motorplan, the cost (converted to USD) was around $1400.

Dropped off my x3 last night for service.

They smartly wanted it to sit overnight.

This morning they could not replicate the smoke (which totally amazes me).

However, they still are moving forward and are ordering the parts since I actually took a (crappy) video of my car making the smoke yesterday morning.

I am told they are going to replace the oil feed.

I will keep you advised.

Thanks.

It was probably an easy fix they didn't tell about. Probably some small leak that could be easily fixed with some flexseal.

Well my cars in for service now and they informed me that it needs a new turbo. They're submitting the case to BMW to find out how to handle it and getting back to me Monday. I'm assuming this is all covered under the original warranty. This is also a CPO.

Apparently they are treating my situation as a "PUMA case".

I looked that up. The acronym means Problem and Measures management Aftersales.

So they have no ETA on the turbo line parts . . .

So I wait . .

My service advisor called me today and told me that I only needed the oil supply line and the turbo was ok. He said it should be done by next week after they get the part from BMW. Covered under warranty.
I'm hoping the turbo doesn't go bad after the warranty is up but he assured me they sent pictures to BMW and the turbo was fine. We'll see...
Is there anything else I should have them check or do??

adamdmc13,

Did they call this a PUMA situation?

Don't forget some Lucas Oil Stabilizer. It improves the oil quality and reduces the chances of all of this happening again.

Update -

For those interested, car was with BMW for some time. They replaced the oil feed in the turbo. This clearly has not fixed the issue. This morning the smoke was more then a mere puff. It was blowing for a while. I am scheduled to bring it back next week but have asked they see me sooner.

I am guessing the entire turbo will be replaced this time.

I am a tad concerned if this has damaged anything else - such as the cat.

more when I know more.

We just went down this same road. The oil feed tube was replaced, but we still had smoke. Yesterday we got the car back with a new turbo. I am going to let it sit a good 4 days before I check it, but I'm confident the new turbo fixed the problem.

Cheers

That's good to hear I guess.

I expect the same outcome here.

I expect a new turbo in the next week or so.

I was definitely disappointed that the first repair did not work.

The amount of smoke that came out after the alleged repair was even more disappointing.

Based on my reading on the web, BMW has to know the initial repair will not work.

Guess we shall see . . .
