every first gen model has bugs/recalls that get sorted out/fixed by the next year or 2.
everyone should know this by now |

The placement among other cars is not in itself a sufficient determinant, in my experience. This is why although CR's database is unparalleled, it's not that useful for consumers. What really matters to me is how many days per year a given car spends in the shop. You cannot determine that from CR data. You can from True Delta though!
When I was buying the Wrangler, reliability was a concern. CR didn't give it high scores. So, I went to TD and found that although Wranglers were about twice as bad as Toyota FJ, in absolute numbers we were looking at something like 25 to 40 visits per year per 100, and that was for the beginning of the generation. That's not a lot - maybe 3 days down, if that. I bought a Wrangler and only had 1 problem in 9 years that required a repair. If CR deigned to tell us how many G01 X3s were having problems, and how long they were parked while waiting for repair, then we could use that to guide our purchase decisions. But as it is, the rank 5 they awarded does not tell us enough. |

It is a factor, but it's accounted in the model of the CR survey. The one that suffers from this problem a lot more is the J.D.Power Initial Reliability survey. That one had cars sunk because owners compared about the excessive brake dust sticking to alloys.

But Acura hasn't faired well lately in CR's results due to low road test scores and so-so reliability. Poster child: ILX. A Civic with nothing more to recommend it.

Ok good to know, but could you elaborate on how the CR survey accounts for it?

I also looked at the RDX prior to landing on the x3, and the thing that turned me off is the lack of any choice when it comes to exterior/interior color combinations. Acura is tied to their Honda efficiency model, and just doesn't know how to compete in the luxury market because of their lack of "choice". With that said, it's a great car, and offers a lot of value for the price.

BMW is proud of this. When I picked up my F30 335i in Munich and was given a factory tour, the guide pointed out that something like 75% of the cars (at that time) were built-to-order. I like knowing that it's very unlikely that the Alpine White 30i and M40i X3s I have are exactly, precisely just like any other 300 G01 I see on the road.

CU has updated their ratings; X3 now back to #1 in category
I just noticed that Consumer Reports has updated their ratings, and the X3 is back to the number 1 spot in category.
I believe this is due to improved reliability data, so CU believes that BMW has fixed the problems that the early cars were dealing with. Very good news, and a credit to CU for updating ratings promptly when new data indicates it is appropriate. -H |

to me this makes perfect sense, my last car was also a BMW and it was perfect for me at that point and nothing ever went wrong.......ever. there was a squeal from a rear brake at the beginning of my second year a tech rode with me to hear it they kept it for the day and it was debris on the rotor. no stupid "we cant get it to replicate" No we can't find anything wrong" just figured it out and fixed it....perfection.
now this car is better in every way. and I do love this car. yet from the very beginning there have been electrical gremlins, about half the time you unlock it...start it....and ding ding key not present. then how did it just unlock and start? or you want to switch from the center screen tiles to map so you hit the map button, nothing, again......nothing etc. it will eventually happen but until it does it's as if the map button has come unsaddled from its wires. And EVERY SINGLE TIME you go to put it into sport and nothing happens......nothing at all.....you hit it 2-27 times and it will most likely go to adaptive but sometimes you just give up and drive it in comfort. yes I took a "genius" for a ride and yes he saw it happen many many times all three issues. you get the appointment go to drop it off theres no car for you so you have to reschedule again, at this point its been about a month since you first brought it in and you have hit do nothing buttons literally hundreds of times, but you drop it off anyway then two days later they call and say they cant get it to replicate........umm i have the connected app and I can see the car has literally never moved since about thirty minutes after I dropped it off to you yesterday. "well they told me they test drove it" well......they lied. so you leave work the next day ,number three since you left it with them, and you show the mechanic the problem about 25 times in ten minutes and he says it's happening because you are hitting the button too often. so yeah when consumer reports or jd powers asks you tell them. |
