And your proof is...that CR recommends several Audis? That in the current (December, 2018) issue Audi and BMW are listed as having more reliable turbo engines? That Mini has an above average car (the Cooper)?

I know it's too much to hope for in a public forum but I really do wish people would at least try data instead of tropes.

CR was relevant in my father's time, along with land line phones, TWX (telex machines) and American sedans. If I have a question about a car I do my research on boards like this.

And you'll get a self-selected sample. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you understand the source.

I agree enthusiast boards are lodestones of useful info. But the info isn't comparable across vehicles and is sometimes plain wrong.

Wonder what it has to say about the X5. Also considered a leader in its category.

CR shows better than average reliability for the now-replaced X5. I'll bet that the same thing that happened to our cars happens to the new X5: good predicted reliability based on the outgoing model that drops due to "teething" pains on the new model in the first year.

Well mine is going through the steering wheel vibrations right now, not sure if offered a buy back if I wouldn't go for an outgoing 2018 X5 TBH.

That is for 2018 not the redesign.

How in the world can CR have a statistically valid amount of samples to be considered legitimate? They buy 2 G01s and one A/C goes bad, the entire line is garbage?

CR conducts a very comprehensive survey of vehicles in the USA.

Not surprised with the downgrade. My X3’s head unit and interior lighting crapped out within 2 weeks. I thought they’d figure it out by 2019. I guess they are still head in the sand after all.

And don't we know that people who have trouble(s) with vehicles are the ones most likely to complain via survey responses?

As mentioned below, their Reliability data comes from their Owner Surveys.

This is another good reason that I lease my new BMWs for 36K miles, to ensure that my ownership period doesn't go beyond the warranty period.

CR takes a completely left brained (logic) approach to it scar reviews. They give no points for beauty, artistry of design, not true driver appeals of quickness, handling and sportiness.

Yes, this is true. The important distinction that you are missing, however, is more people than is normal are complaining about the G01, in the opinion of Consumer Reports.

Also you have to consider that owners of premium cars like BMW's are more critical of minor issues, for example they're more likely to complain about things like ambient light bleeding & squeaks & rattles than owners of say Honda's & Ford's etc.

Totally true. CR's perfect vehicle is the Toyota Corolla. Their focus is quality/reliability, and that's it. These things are definitely important, but something tells me that's not the only reason that people are buying BMWs. Sans major issues, a savvy buyer needs to taken information from multiple sources when making an informed vehicle purchase.

CR does talk about cars' handling and acceleration, but usually as a way of making a safety point. If you follow them closely (they have a good podcast on YouTube called "Talking Cars"), you'll see that they do, in fact, offer opinions on these topics.

But since beauty and styling are in the eyes of the beholder, they don't comment in their official ratings. IIRC, they did mention in print that the Pontiac Aztek and first-gen Subaru Tribeca were, ahem, "ungainly".

Completely off-topic, but......

The Pontiac Aztek was down-right frightening.

"I was in the audience at the Detroit auto show the day GM unveiled the Pontiac Aztek and I will never forget the gasp that audience made. Holy hell! This car could not have been more instantly hated if it had a Swastika tattoo on its forehead. In later interviews with GM designers — who, for decency's sake, will remain unnamed — it emerged that the Aztek design had been fiddled with, fussed over, cost-shaved and otherwise compromised until the tough, cool-looking concept had been reduced to a bulky, plastic-clad mess. A classic case of losing the plot. The Aztek violates one of the principal rules of car design: We like cars that look like us. With its multiple eyes and supernumerary nostrils, the Aztek looks deformed and scary, something that dogs bark at and cathedrals employ to ring bells (cf., Fiat Multipla). The shame is, under all that ugliness, there was a useful, competent crossover."
