Oil Change
Hey Guys
I have a 2016 X4 Jun 2015 build. When I look for oil change kit on getbmwparts, I get 2 options.
I wish they were more specific than just saying MY16. I checked my manual and it doesn't say specifically which one to use. Any ideas before I contact dealer. Thanks |

Look under the hood of your car. On my '17, there is a small sticker which states the oil specification. The printed manual is useless when it comes to figuring out what oil to use - too general and too vague.

I use Castrol 0W-40 European blend (BMW approved), every 5,000 miles.
I prefer Mobil 1 (I use 5W-50 in my Porsche), but it's no longer approved by BMW.

No stickers under the hood. My diesel after 8yrs has 1 but not x4. Probably lost it during one of my cleaning sessions. So I just ordered 5w-30 ll-01
After oil reset I got 7000 miles for next oil change. Last time it was 8k miles. I always thought it was a preset counter. I wonder why it reduced to 7k miles. |

About oil changes
The system uses an algorithm to determine when you need to change your oil. Simply put, if you drive your car like a race car, you'll need to change your oil sooner then if you drive you car like a grandma.
It doesn't matter if I occasionally choice to drive my X4 like a racecar as it is designed to handle that way, that's why I drive a BMW X4 M40i. And, it so much fun. Normally, I drive like a grandma, and I only need to change every 10 - 11 k miles. Although it doesn't hurt to change the oil sooner then later. BMW's oil and Mobil 1 are both synthetic oil, as you know, and has no viscosity breakdown. When your changing your oil, you are essentially cleaning out your engine. I am huge into changing oil sooner then later for this purpose, even driving like a grandma. No offense to any grandmas out there, I have one too. |

Thank you mighty. I did not know about special algorithm. Glad to know BMW changed it. My diesel has a preset counter which I don't trust. I just change oil around 5-6k miles
