Looking for insights on X1
Hello all - I posted a version of this in the X1 forum but didn't get much uptake, there seems to be more activity in this forum so I thought I'd ask here as well. Does anyone have any insight or thoughts on how quickly BMW is going to find a remedy for the X1 B pillar recall issue? My wife and I are planning to give our teenage daughters her 2011 MDX and purchase her a new vehicle...and we have to do it somewhat quickly, probably within a month or so. Memorial Day weekend would be great with the sales and end of month pricing.
We're currently considering a new 2019 X1, a 2016 CPO X1, a 2016 CPO X3, and a new 2019 RDX. My wife drove, and ruled out, the 2016 X3 last weekend because she says it's "too much like my MDX." I really don't agree with that but she wants "something different." I also have a 2019 X3 and she doesn't want the same size vehicle. She really likes the X1 and new RDX. I love the fact that you can get a well equipped CPO X1 for between $25 and $30k - that is tough to beat. That said, both a new 2019 X1 and RDX have standard safety features that I very much want in her next car but then you're looking at a much different price point. My hope is that the X1 recall remedy is available before we need to make decision. I've liked the Honda and Acura vehicles we've owned but loved the BMWs I've owned...The X1 looks to be a fun, little SUV that would be great for my wife's needs. I honestly don't care which vehicle she chooses. We buy and keep her cars for many years. If it were up to me, we would have brought the CPO X3 home last weekend and been done with it. It was a great car at a great price. Anyway, thanks for any insights you might have on how quickly that remedy might be in place. My CA says "probably in a month," though I'm not sure even he believes that... Thanks!

no one but BMW knows for certain but most likely it just needs some better padding on the B pillar as the issue is the test dummies head sustains injuries on it in lower trim now. it might be just an overlay or it might be a totally new trim piece.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I've had X2 loaners previously and it's a nice vehicle as well. It appears to sit lower to the ground than the X1 but maybe it's not a significant difference or maybe it just a visual thing. I've told this story before, but my wife and I were t-boned in my 3 series last November. The F30 died, I spent a week in the hospital after emergency surgery, and my wife had broken ribs and a concussion. As you might imagine, we're certain we want to be "higher up" than a typical sedan.

Wow - glad you are Ok. at least you were in a good car. Could have been different outcome in a kia.
X2 is similar to X1 as far as seating high. it has lower roof in the back. M235 just handles great and has a nice engine. Not sure why they did not put it in x1. |

i dont think the X1 fix will meet your timeline
right now the expected recall start is beginning of July, but with the fix still in development. i would expect that to slide though, theres 100K+ X1s that are being recalled, and they need to make sure any replacement part passes testing. then will come the order of priority of who gets the parts. i suspect due to the just in time nature of the supply chain: first will be cars in production, then customer cars, then cars for sale on dealer lots. there's a stop sale on all new X1s right now

Another thought for you to consider, is to give your existing X3 to your wife, and you get something else (X3M anyone?)
The X1/X2 definitely fit your wife's wants for smaller SUV. Judging by the safety of X3 and videos of a X1 flying into a tunnel incidence (driver came out relatively unharmed), you can rest assured that you are well protected against another serious accident. I'm not against the RDX, but I'm just not comfortable with any first year model. Check out the RDX forum and see what people say. By the way, two years ago I bought a 2017 Toyota RAV4 hybrid for my teenage daughter with all safety options, including 360 cameras and I feel good knowing she is well protected. Owned that car for two full years and nothing broke. Over 30 mpg for a SUV is impressive. Of course, it's not meant to be a luxury brand, but we did not pay luxury car price for that either. |

Yea, I agree...we may end up w/ the RDX. Which is also very nice. Again, I wish should we have liked the CPO X3...
Thanks for all the help, appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Honestly, I thought we'd just pick up another MDX but we had one as a loaner about a month ago and she hated it...just hated it. It feels so much bigger than her 2011 and I thought the steering was numb. Unfortunately, I don't think we can wait out the X1 remedy...

x1 was possibly the worst little suv I've been in. it was a standard 28i or whatever. I drove it around 4k miles highway. uncomfortable, wobbly at higher speeds, brakes supremely bad, cheap interiors. don't get an x1. they're bad.
something different is a volvo xc60 t6 r design. test drive one. |

The X1 is generally regarded by numerous sources as one of the best CUV's in its segment. C&D a while back ran a comparison test of the main competitors in the segment and it their words "the X1 ran away with the test". Obviously not for everyone but it competes well vs. similar CUV's. We had a '17 for about 20 months with no issues at all but traded it in on a '19 X3. The X3 just offered some things that appealed to us more.

I really don't think you were looking for alternative recommendations and I can't even believe I'm saying this but, the Range Rover Evoque is a pretty nice vehicle. I've never been a fan of the styling but the newer ones seem to look at little more elegant. I had a LR Discovery Sport before the X3 and I got a new Evoque as a loaner just a couple of months ago. I have to say it was quiet, smooth and extremely comfortable. Just so easy to drive and a cool interior too. Did I say comfortable? The seats were sweet!
Anyhoo, I assume it has all the safety features you need. Reliability maybe, maybe not? But BMW has it's challenges as well. Oh, and performance-wise it's nothing special. A lot less plastic bits than an RDX though. Just a thought. Good luck! |

I can’t answer your question but I can comment that we have an X1 and an X3. Of course the X3 is nicer but the X1 for $25k to $30k is a very nice little vehicle. It’s my girlfriends car but most of my friends were shocked it was so inexpensive. We bought a slightly used certified one with 8k miles on it for well under $30K. Much nicer than most $25K small suv’s in my opinion.

I am also on a similar track as OP. Looking to by CPO X3 or X1 around $25k. Although I can wait longer than OP, until Sept.
I wonder if BMW will provide big incentive to buy those X1s being hold back months behind for sale due to the recall. If so, I might leaned toward X1, otherwise, X3 will be my choice for the wify. Quote:

My CA informed me today that there was still no remedy for the X1 B1 pillar problem. With production of the 2020 supposed to begin in July, it doesn't look good. My CA is trying to push me to an X3. Mind you I ordered a 2019 X1 on April 23rd, production stopped 2 days before my build was to begin. They bumped me to a 2020 (same price and configuration). I can wait for the X1, but should I, or move to the X3?
