X3 M40i windshield replacement

Barely 10,000 miles and already a pretty decent sized windshield crack on this 2018 X3 M40i. We replaced the the cracked windshield with a new OEM BMW windshield in house.

Same happened to me in my F31 335d within 1000 miles! I recommend avoiding the road to Tilbury - it’s full of wagons and debris, or follow at 100 yards...

That's an odd-shaped crack for a road hazard impact. Could you see where it hit?

driving up Rte 16 Ossippee NH Thursday morning......not much traffic.....rock hit the lower right hand corner of the windshield about an inch from the pillar.

Nice small impact hole.

Reached my destination....parked the M40i in the heat all day....came back....a crack was half way across the windshield.

New one going in on Monday...had to be ordered...with HUD and all.

11,000 miles.

No point of impact on the windshield. This one has us guessing as to how it happened. Even the customer isnt sure how it happened.

I have exactly the same crack on my week old X3 I have a little over 500 miles on it! They say there is a tiny chip therefore they will not warranty it!!

I had rock it lower passenger corner.. turned into 20" crack and growing.. Replaced. Dealer has to "re-calibrate" system after windshield replacement.

Make sure that get's done. I thought was for heads-up display, turns out it's for the vision camera stuff - Safety related.

Had three windshields on my M3 and the X3 replaced. They break very easily. Then state farm canceled my insurance due to excessive claims. After 21 years of no accidents......

Especially if you have the HUD, these windshields are NOT cheap to replace. That's why I opt for the $0 deductible windshield replacement on my auto insurance. Eek!

Windshield Calibration

My new X3 also suffered a stone hit at 3000 miles directly in the center at the bottom. I have been researching windshield replacements. Has anyone heard of windshield calibration? This is done to make sure the cameras work correctly for the safety systems. Check out this website https://info.glass.com/windshield-re...ibration-adas/.
I think I will try the resin fix method so i don’t have to get the windshield replaced.

Interesting...as I was going through options with finance on my lease, they upsold me on the windshield protection plan. Some $800 for unlimited windshield replacements over my 3yr lease. I know people on their 2nd and 3rd windshields already (Mercedes leases) and they've already spent way more than that. Felt like the best insurance I ever bought. Bring on the rock chips!

$3400CAD for a new windshield OEM. Crazy amount of money. I wonder if the insurance company will drop me after a couple new ones. The glass seems so soft! anyone else in Canada have one replaced ?

XPEL is releasing a windshield protection solution that should be available soon which I'm hoping relieves this headache. I don't see anything on their site about it yet but my local detailer was describing it as a multi-layer application where the top layer can be peeled off after an impact that is intended to last two years per install.

I won't be dealing with my cracked windshield until I can protect the new one so hopefully it becomes available soon. Cost wise it might be cheaper to just replace them through insurance but it seems that's not a great strategy either huh? Personally I feel like this shouldn't be a problem I have to deal with so regularly and it really annoys me to have cracks and chips in my vision so I'd rather put money into prevention.

Hopefully the product delivers, we shall see.

A rock hit our windshield at the very top edge just to the left of the rear view mirror; it kept getting longer all by itself even though we left it in the garage undriven until our dealer got the replacement windshield in stock and had a loaner for us; almost a month of waiting. We have the $50 deductible on windshield replacement from our insurance company so they just cut us a check and we paid BMW directly. They did a great job on installation.

Just joined the cracked windshield club

I've got just over 10,000 miles on my 2019 X3 M40i and this morning I saw a 15-20 inch horizontal crack from the center of my windshield across to the passenger side after my car sat unused outside in warm weather yesterday. I don't see a star from an impact but I'm sure it was a stone from highway driving on Thursday or Friday. I've got rain sensing wipers and the heads up display, and also full glass on my auto insurance. I guess I will call my insurance tomorrow and then the BMW dealer that fixed my broken driver side door window last month! I hope the insurance doesn't give me a hard time about having BMW fix it.

This is the 4th windshield in 6 months. Is anything else experiencing this? Seems as though any small object that hits the corner of the windshield causes a crack. Is it me or a design flaw?

Two of the demo cars I looked at had cracks almost exactly the same as this. I think that the chassis of these twist and causes the screens to crack. That mixed with a screen with incredibly soft glass its not great.

Canada Dealer Replacement

Has anyone had there windshield replaced at a dealer in Ontario with OEM glass ?

My insurance company won't pay the dealers price and Speedy Glass replaces it for less than half the cost of the dealer.

With a lease I assume I should install OEM glass. Can anyone share pricing?

thx
