Ok so my car hates me so much, now I have a new fault (discovered at the shop randomly, at a routine inspection) that left them baffled, they said, quote "we never saw this code before".

The code is as per picture attached, and it's described "engine speed monitoring difference between camshaft and crankshaft too high"

They basically said that if that were true, the car would run like absolute shit, as the timing chain would be out of place, also it should not start at all if one of the sensors was kaput. But the car runs perfectly fine, starts fine, all is well, I would have not known about this unless they didn't read the codes, no CEL, no nothing.

They advised I should do a firmware update at the dealer at the as they suspect it's a software issue/glitch, not a real problem.

Have you ever had this happen to your car? It seems that I am chosen for weird "nobody knows" shit like this. B47 2.0 diesel xdrive.

By the description it does sound physically impossible, but that depends on what the design tolerance is. If your timing chain is stretched, there will be more difference (or "slop" between the the two shafts) than when new, so maybe that's enough. Is the car high mileage?

That's what they said "impossible". Car mileage is 150.000 mls (243.000 km)

Not yet, they suspect software issue so they sent me to the dealer for a software update to see if it clears. I am sheduled on the 20th at BMW for this update.

so I carried out the software update at the dealer, error is still present, nobody can give me a straight answer.

Thing is, I am reluctant to open the engine up to check the timing, also the car was tested by everybody at the dealer, road test, etc and it runs perfectly, no power loss, no high fuel consumption, no noises, no idle or acceleration problems, absolutely nothing wrong that could lead someone to think there is something wrong with the timing or chain. Plus it's the B47 engine.

They said I should maybe replace the timing chain "to see if it goes away" but Jesus Christ, the cost is insane.

Bottom line is that if the timing was out of place, the car would definitely run like shit, and since it's not the case, the general consensus is that nobody knows what could this be.

Maybe I will have them replace the camshaft/cankshaft sensors, at least it's not going to cost me a fortune.

I have the same error. Does any one have any clue what can be the issue?
The car is running smoothly.
