Reporting on my display fading issue after the tint
I notice the car isn't thinking it is night time, as the cluster still showing white, instead of red. however, Cluster / iDrive screen / HVAC , all dimmed. As soon as I open the door, everything brighten up. I also use flashlight on my phone to shine on left side of Cluster and everything brighten up as well. So, anyone have luck dealer can do anything like make the sensor less sensitive? I may have to take out the 20% tint , which match the rear window, and out in something like 50% to try?

mingMy advice would be to give your current tint some time and see if you adjust to it. On mine, while it's noticeable, sometimes I don't notice that the screen has dimmed - When I do it's a pain but I'll live with it. Good luck.

Just tinted mine today; 20% front and 60% rear. Prior to Jan no dimming issues. One th way home it dimmed a few times when passing through shadows like trees and such. Fixed it by opening the sunroof shade.
To be honest it doesn’t really bother me, but the tint job does. I’ll save that for another post. |

I haven't do coding yet and thinking I should do it to solve this iDrive fading issue. However when I check Bimmercode website, under G01, I don't see this item listed. Any idea why? Is it their website just have old info?[/QUOTE] There are tons more files in expert mode in BimmerCode. They just list the functions they have automated.

I noticed some fading a couple days ago...nothing that significant. I could still see everything on the displays even with sunglasses on but it was noticeably dimmer.

Thank you it work well.
I know this is BMW problem, not limited to G01. Big question is: Anyone successful have dealer resolve the issue for good, included the cluster / HVAC disaply? E.g. Make it less sensitive. Or Allow manual adjustment instead of auto.

X5 Dimming Gauges and Display 2019
Been reading all the comments about the display dimming from window tint. Have the same problem. Finally located the light sensor on the full digital instrument panel. It is on the left side panel right above the lit headlight icon. I took a small flashlight and lit that area and all went bright like it should. What was BMW thinking placing a light sensor on the display panel. What purpose does this serve. I have tried everything from lights on during the day. No resolve, only way for display to get bright is to put driver window down. CRAZY I’m telling you. I sent this forum link to our local BMW Genius for him to see there is big problems here and to see if he can assist in getting this resolved for all of us. Very frustrating for sure. If anyone else out there finds a fix PLEASE let s know.

After 2 weeks of owning my X3, I started noticing the dimming when pulling up in or out of the garage, I thought at first that my eyes were blinded by the sun.
HOWEVER, my front windows are not tinted and I didn't mess around with them at all... This issue is annoying, hope we can find a hotfix! |

Not sure if anyone with the MY20 and tint still impacted by this issue? Just got mine tinted today (35% VLT fronts and 20% rears) but have not noticed any dimming so far. Was a bright day to start with though.

Hi. I noticed this now too. I have a 2020 and I have 20% tint all around except windshield. On a sunny day the head unit hvac and instrument cluster all randomly get dim and brighten back up. :

Same here with my G01 2020 fit with ID7. This fading/dimming is driving me crazy, at times I can barely see any info for a few seconds. I can't understand howcome we pay prime for a G01, with all safety tech included, but then I cannot even read the instrument panels properly! I have contacted my car dealer in Munich, the problem is known to them - it's a bad design issue - and still unsolved after 2 years. It affects other models too (I had the same on my previous G30 5-Series, but to a lesser extend). I formally wrote to BMW Germany a couple of days ago asking for a retrofit (AUTO DIM ON/OFF). The more we formally complain, the higher the chances to get it sorted out on a future system update. Everyone should be doing the same. Let's keep fighting for this, it's worth it.

First of all, you have to understand that in order to be able to change display brightness depending on light sitations... the sensor has to sit where the display is. There is no other way to do it, it will then correctly deal with shadows, darkness, light from the front/rear/side whatever.
Secondly, you can't blame BMW for a poor design when you have tinted your front windows. That is not a BMW design, that is a 3rd party aftermarket installation. So loose the tint or find your own solution to the display brightness. It's not BMW's fault.

No issues with my 2020 so far - 35% VLT on the front windows and 20% VLT on rear windows & windscreen. Nothing on the front windscreen (illegal to tint over here in Australia).
