I decided I am going to finally ditch my RFT for Conti DWS... I'm trying to figure out what will be sufficient for my backup plan.

I currently have roadside assistance but a lot of people are telling me I should get a spare... others say a portable compressor and a patch kit is enough...

What do you guys use?

Portable comp, jack, tools and tire plug kit- takes up bit of space but I do venture into areas that are a distance from services.

Portable battery powered compressor, tire plug kit, breaker bar and lug nut socket, scissor jack, tire pressure gauge, and a cell phone to call for help if tire is unable to be repaired. All of this fits under the cargo floor and in the drivers side cubby of the cargo area.

I would second this.

You'll need a tire plug kit to plug to hole should you get a flat. The compressor to pump air into the tire after its repaired.
If you can't get to the wheel to make the repair, you'll need to take the wheel off.
For that, you'll need a jack, a preferably a breaker bar, a lug socket, and perhaps a torque wrench to bolt the wheel back at the right torque.

If the damage is bad enough that the tire plug can't fix, you'll want a spare.

Personally, I have roadside assistance from AAA. They'll come to my recuse if I have trouble. I have a spare at my home if I ever need it.
I'd hate to take up trunk space with a spare, it'll also smell like rubber with it in. I'll have to wait for roadside to come to me, but I figure if its something I'm paying for, might as well use it. If I didn't have this, I would pack a kit and leave a spare at home to have (and hope I wouldn't need it). The kit should fit under the trunk liner or in cubbyholes.

if you need to remove the wheel, that probably means the plug is useless.

So a jack and breaker bar is not useful.

A GOOD quality 12v air compressor and plug kit is what op needs.

95% of flat tire ive got was nails/screws, and the tire remain accessible when the wheel is on the car.

side wall flats or running on a flat tire, although is rare, plug kit will be useless. Then yes youll need a jack and breaker bar, but for what, no spare !


For long road trip, pack a winter wheel and call it a day.

Pretty much what I have.
Found a small but sturdy scissor jack rated for 3 tonnes. On Amazon there was an incredible deal on a high quality breaker bar (collapsible, chrome vanadium!!!) with 4 different lug nut sizes. This one here - check the reviews. The tire plug repair kit is this here I am using. I already repaired 5 tires in the last 2 years and none of them are leaking. Actually they did hold pressure while the wheels were stowed away during the winter. For the portable compressors there are many options. All fits under the rear trunk cover.

Plug kit, compressor and AAA. I have yet to call AAA, but I have plugged a couple of tires, including one right at the corner of the tread and sidewall.
