35i Eco Mode

How much of an improvement can I expect (roughly) to see from making a long highway miles only drive (several hundred) cruising in eco-mode compared to normal? Trying to calculate fuel stops/pricing prior to the upcoming trip. Does eco on the highway make that much of a difference?

If you use cruise control it will likely dull the amount of acceleration as you go up and down hills, which would help. It will also run the engine a few degrees hotter which reduces frictional losses. If you don't use cruise control, it allows "sailing" (basically trans disconnects engine from drivetrain, rpms drop to idle) to coast down hills for a longer distance before you need to throttle up to continue at speed. But realistically it's probably less than 10% improvement overall.

eco mode is most effective in city driving

to conserve fuel on mostly highway driving, just drive the speed limit and make sure your tires are properly inflated, maybe a few pounds extra

Thanks for the replies. I don't use (I actually really dislike it) cruise control.

Cruise control will improve your FE more than eco mode, I would think.

Cruise control will maintain speed within some parameter, and where that causes FE to suffer is on slopes. Put simply you're best to slow down as you climb a hill, and then coast down it, at speeds beyond the parameters of cruise. BMW even labels this as a feature - "cruise control with brake" because the car will apply brakes to slow you down rather than coasting. Braking = wasted energy. This is where the "sailing" function comes in.

I used it over a 300km highway trip, cruise set at 120km/h. Saved maybe 5km over the entire trip. Even in the city I find it's next to useless unless you really play the long game. I save maybe 15km / 750km tank.

I just keep it in comfort now, unless having fun in sport.

It does have advantages if you're trying to keep RPM low while the engines reaching temp but that's all it's good for in practice IMO

Thanks, sounds like it's not a lot of savings for the short-term.

sure, but on flatter ground cruise control beats manual throttle. I think cruise vs manual is a greater saving than eco vs standard.
