Any update on this? My passenger side rail is peeling and BMW have said its not covered as car its over 3 year old. They said it would of been covered under the paintwork warranty but that is only for first 3 years.

Sweep it under the carpet.....

If this would have been a major body paint problem, BMW would have issued extrordinary warranty- to avoid bad publicity. Now it is - seemingly - a minor supplier issue, and they hope to kill the problem with no action/silence.

My reading is that the supplier had a problem with one or a couple of batches, but is now OK - or BMW changed supplier.

It is fairly easy - but still a bit costly - to have shop (non BMW) do a repaint.

I just notice my rails are peeling. It's about 6inches long from the driver side front. I have crossbars but it's no where near where it's peeling as the peeling portion is the very front of the rails where you can't attach the cross bars. It's annoying and I'm pretty sure the dealer or BMW won't cover it as my car is a 2014 and almost 5yrs old.

I'll just buy some touch up paint and hopefully it wouldn't look too bad.

I have 2013 f25 in carbon black. Looks like both of my rail tracks are pealing.. I've never used cross bars or the tracks!! Seems like the f25 before 2015 has a lot of ISSUES 😡

Have the same problem on our 2013. The rails are black, not the silver color. I believe the paint color is the jet black bmw color (668). I was able to find someone to powder coat them for $125 all in for both. I actually picked up a used set of a totaled car for very cheap. They had a ton of scratches, but I didn't care since I was going to refinish anyways. In the end I'll have two newly powder coated rails for less than one new one from bmw. I think the powder coat will be a lot more durable.

The other option was going to be to pull the factory ones off the roof and have them refinished, but I didn't want to deal with the downtime.

Weren't they a pain to remove since the headliner needs to be dropped which requires a bunch of trim to be removed?

Yeah, I expect it will be a pain. At 7 years and 80,000 miles, I don't think that BMW will cover it under warranty, and I'm not trying to pay them for the labor.

I'm upgrading the CIC to NBT and have to run a wire along the roof from the dash to the rear antenna...so I kind of have to drop it anyways. If I wasn't doing that I'd probably try to see what I could do with the touch up paint first, but the flaking paint at eye level does bother me...

Seems to as common an issue on the F25 as the delaminating glove box. In searching to buy an X3 last month every one I looked at had peeling rails (I was looking at models from 2011-2014). The peeling was mostly in the grove and always starting from the front of the rail. Some had peeled halfway down the length of the rail, inc on one car that had done only 10k miles.

One idiot/sexist dealer claimed it's due to 'women putting their handbags on the roof'. Unless they're made of sandpaper and being forced up and down the rails repeatedly I very much doubt it.

local paint shop did not have any cheap solution for the pealing rails. i do have the delaminating glove box also. im the original owner (2011 x3 35i) with only 102000 km on it so i would like to keep it some more years and to find a solution for the peling rails.

peeling just started on the front of the driver's side rail of my 2014. Has anyone found a good touch up paint? Since it just started, I'm hoping I can stop or slow the peeling with some touch up or clear coat.

I found a paint match in a can and sprayed them over the weekend. It was fairly easy.
