X3 2013 Drivetrain Warning, NO check engine light

Hello,

I drive an X3 2013 28i. I've been getting this drivetrain warning that comes up on the console, but no check engine light whenever I'm accelerating into the 40+ mph range. Sometimes lower, sometimes higher. As soon as i restart the car, it goes away. The car seems to run fine regardless of the warning light, but obviously it's going to affect the sale of the car and honestly it's just annoying. It does have a little lag when trying to accelerate at lower speeds, but in sport mode it seems to drive just fine.

I've taken it to the dealer and they had me pay for a recoding for $300 to see if it goes away and it obviously did not. They said the only other option is to pay $5000+ and change the entire "drivetrain".

I've read some stuff to change spark plugs and ignition coils, which i've done, but still get the error

Any help would be appreciated.

Gerren

Take the car to a reputable independent shop and get a second opinion. Ask for a listing of the fault codes their diagnostic computer reads out after they scan the car's systems, have them explain the details of what they find and their proposed remedy prior to authorizing any repair work.
Good luck/Bill

Try a boost leak test. Would cause some sluggishness where you'd notice it. Sometimes if the leak is small enough the car will show a drive train warning but the leak is not big enough to pop a CEL.

Good luck!

what is the error you are getting? a common one is the solenoid on the turbo.

General codes indicate either too much pressure or low pressure.

After some thought on this I realized it could be a failing Throttle Position Sensor. Just had it go out on my Mercedes. It car did the same thing yours is doing, I just got lucky enough and one time it threw a CEL.

Cruise at about 60mph in 8th gear and (while in fully automatic shifting) floor the gas and see if you get the error there. if you get an error, that would likely mean it is the TPS if you've changed ignition equipment already.

If not the TPS it could be a faulty solenoid on the turbo or a fuel pump issue
