2019 X3 sdrive30i - rear camera issues

Any idea why the rear camera would stop working from time to time? We bought this new 10 days ago and have had the issue a few random times. Before heading to dealer tomorrow I figured we should ask in case there is an easy answer.

Other than this one issue, we love the new ride. It’s loaded with most every feature possible as an Sdrive model. We compared to the Cadillac xt5, Lincoln MKX/nautilus and Mercedes glc300 and there seemed to be no comparison in features, ride, interior quality, etc. All compared models were between $50k to $55k as well. We didn’t look at Audi, jaguar, or similar due to lack of dealer support. We also skipped Volvo due to prior dealer experience.

Thanks for any tips.

Congrats to your new car!

Your problem seems to be loose connection or some sorts of malfunctions. If it happens to you next time, take a video or picture on the iDrive screen with your phone, so you can show the dealer how the rear camera 'does not work'. Good luck!

Hi,

I have an Sdrive 30i and have posted about the blacking out of the rear camera in the past. So far I have experienced it twice! For me it seemed to happen when I put the car in reverse IMMEDIATELY after ignition. Is that how it happened to you? The camera stayed blacked out until I switched the car off and left it so for about 10-15 minutes. A BMW service professional told me I need to give the electronics some time to "boot" to avoid this in future. I don't agree to this fully but that trick seems to work so far.

Sounds similar. We will try what you mentioned to see if it helps. Thanks.

Mine did the same, and the dealer here gave me the same answer. Hasn't happened again and been 6 months.

Hello,

Mine has just gone too, the sensors are working but the screen is just black. I have tried turning it off and on and locking the car again but nothing. Also took it for a quick drive and came back but still no luck.

If the case is im putting into reverse to quick when I start the car, what about when I have driven and then put it in reverse ?

Happened to me yesterday - was hopefully solved by leaving the car off for 20 minutes. When I started it up again, the camera worked just fine. Reading the above experience reinforces that hopefully it will not happen again.

Tried waiting 15 minutes and still no luck. Took photos and videos and the dealer says they couldn't figure it out, and that I had to pay 150.00 for a diagnostic. I have the extended warranty but he says the camera isn't covered...... suggestions please?

Just had same issue...blacked out rearview camera

Just had the same issue. Have had my 2019 X3 since March. Have had the camera not work for a few seconds in the past but doesn't happen often. Drove up to Home Depot about 20 mins ago. Rearview camera worked perfectly as I backed out of driveway. Leaving HD, the camera is now completely blacked out.

I'll try waiting a while before trying again to see if things "reboot". If that doesn't work, I'm calling the delearship tomorrow. For the kinda money I paid for this vehicle, the camera shouldn't be this finicky. Never had a problem with my previous vehicle, 2016 F150 FX4. SMH

UPDATE: Didn't go back out to the car yesterday after having a problem with the rearview camera. Left for the office this morning and camera now working perfectly. Go figure!!!

This has happened to me once, and I think it was a similar situation described above when I put it into reverse quite quickly after starting the car.

I rebooted idrive by pressing and holding the power button. Worked perfectly after that. Have not experienced it since.

Has anyone found out what is causing this issue? I only have had mine for 2 months and it happens every week, I reboot it, and it works perfectly fine. Today, it decided to stop working. When I put the car in reverse, only the sensors are displayed in the middle (like if the camera is off) and the rear camera option is greyed out. I have tried everything, including leaving the car alone for a couple of hours.

Mine does it too. Seems like a bug. Just does it sometimes when you are quick about putting it into reverse and switching it to the wide view.

I also hate that warning message. It obstructs the view and increases risk.

After 2 months of trial and error finally the issue was identified and solved. The part was back ordered so I had to wait a month for the part to arrive. It was this little guy right here in the photo that was causing all this trouble. The Ethernet switch.

It's a known issue. It usually requires a programming update.

Hello sorry for reviving old thread, but i have exactly the same issue. My camera menu is all greyed out and in the middle of the screen i have parking lines picture. I read in other thread that dealer also tried to change the camera, did it help somehow or after changing it still showed only parking lines and only after that they decided to change ethernet box?

P.S. Sorry for my English.

Software update fixes the issue. Its known to happen on all of the iDrive6 vehicles. I just can't tell you which version fixes it, think its is V or something...
