Exhaust POP

Guys

I have 2019 M40i
I know a lot of people here LOVE the Exhaust POP.
I personally hate it.
I want more DEEP tone, but don't want any POP and CRACK.

Any idea how to stop those POP and CRACK, without replacing the exhaust?

So it will stop if I put the engine in Comfort mode?

I don't hear the Pop and crack when I am driving with window roll up.
I only notice it today when my wife drove my car this morning when I was waiting for school bus with kids down the street.
When she drove by, man..... Pop and crack all the way.

The car is very well insulated especially if you have acoustic glass. It's only with the windows down I can hear the rumblings at the back. But to your point, I've always felt the exhaust note for the X3 should be deep and growly rather than gun shots as it suits the car better. In your instance, keep the engine setting to Comfort via Sport Ind and see how you get on.

Exactly, the pop will be somewhat there in comfort, but I have to pay attention to hear it...my radio loudness takes over all the time. It will be there all the time in Sport Ind

Exactly, I would want more Deep and Growly sound, vs Pop and cracking sound like harley davidson rolling down the street.

There are a few threads on this already, try doing a search. Some members have been able to eliminate the loud pops and crackles even when the vehicle is in Sport or Sport Plus via flash tuning.

The only other way I know to do it is in the Sport Individual mode:
1. Go into "Configure Sport Individual"
2. For "Engine" you have to select "Comfort"
3. For Steering and Transmission, you can leave it on Sport or Sport Plus

No more pops and crackles, and you still have the quick shifts of the transmission. The throttle response is just slightly slower, but it's a good compromise. I've also noticed that the upshifts and downshifts are smoother (I don't know why because I still have the transmission in Sport, but it definitely seems smoother to me). I drive in this mode often.

I am not a fan of the pops and bangs and mostly use adaptive mode which seems to give better throttle response without the boy racer sound effects (mine is the more powerful 2018 model

I'm right there with you, @lo_cheng! Eagerly waiting for this trend of "a car isn't a proper sportscar unless it makes stupid popping and crackling sounds" to die the horrible death it deserves. This idea where people will have fun at the expense of harming someone else's aural environment is not long term sustainable, particularly as population density increases.

I love all the pops and bangs the M40i makes. I think the fact that it isn't expected of something like the X3 is what makes me enjoy it even more.

+1. I want the pops and bangs when I feel like it. When I prefer or need a quiet ride? I put the drive mode in anything other than Sports. These pops can also be eliminated via Sport Individual mode by sitting engine to Comfort as someone else has suggested already, This optionality is great and it makes the X3 even more enjoyable.

The M40i is well known since day 1 that it will make those noise when driven in Sports mode. Many of Our EU peers are dying to get those pops and bangs back after BMW add the particulate filter in the 2019 models and has to make adjustment to the exhaust accordingly. I am guessing excess fuel dump to the exhaust (what creates those pops) would also somehow clog or interfere the particulate filter.

Today I just noticed that the initial start up grooowl is 1/5th as long as it used to be.

The M40i is 7 months old and has 15k miles on the ODO.

Interesting.

It's also warmer too, so maybe it takes shorter time to reach the temp it needs?
