random locking / unlocking while washing car

I have roughly 8k miles, but washed it myself for the first time. At random times, it would lock or unlock. Heard the beep, flash, and mirrors folding / unfolding. It probably happened a couple dozen times that day. Had my key in my pocket, then moved the key to my jacket pocket and it kept happening. I have the fob protector. Pretty sure i wasn't accidentally pressing the remote buttons. I don't usually hang out for an extended period of time next to my car with the remote. Not sure if it was that or maybe the water from the washing was causing a short somewhere. it was very annoying.

Anyone else experience this?

It's normal. You need to leave the fob about 20 feet away for it to cease the locking/unlocking issue.

If you have comfort access, than it's like BobsM3Coupe said. If not, than something is wrong.

yep happens to me too. first time caught me off guard, even the trunk opened. The water must be triggering the sensor.

This whole random trunk opening has me worried. If the key is left in the car (in my garage) do I have to worry about triggering the kick to open rear hatch?

My garage isn’t that long and would have to get pretty close to the back of the car if I wanted to get to drivers side without opening the garage.

Similarly if the key is left in the car while hand washing at a local car wash, would the hatch open?

Same behavior on M-B. Another option is to leave the fob in the vehicle.

It's fairly easy to experiment by leaving the fob inside your car, and try the kick to open option and see if that works.

The other advantage of leaving your key fob away is to have them being stationary for an extended period of time, rendering the fob inactive will stop it from emitting a signal, and thereby disabling Comfort Access while you wash the car. So no tailgate opening by accidental kick too!

just tested this after work - kicked open tailgate while key fob in my pocket to make sure everything worked. Threw key fob inside cup holders and try the kick open feature again - this time the tailgate would not open even if I performed the full Russian dance back there.

Understood but I am not an owner yet as mine is being built. I should have by end of May. I was just doing some pre-delivery worry...

Happens all the time on my MB when washing - water from the hose will trigger the lock and unlock motions. Throw the key inside the car until you're done!

ah, like it is mistaking the water for me touching the handle? Even if it is normal, it doesn't seem right.

will it definitely never lock if the key is left inside? if it is randomly locking, seems risky to put the key inside and get locked out.

I wonder if rain would do the same thing? i park on city streets every day, so would hate to start walking away from the car on a rainy day and have it randomly unlock before i get out of range.

Same behavior with any vehicle with the “sensing” function in the handles. I have to leave the fobs for all my cars in the house when I wash them.

When your fob is far away, Comfort access will be disabled so no worry there. You can put the fob in a drawer or something to keep it stationary while home.

You can also use BMW Connected App to check and make sure car is still properly locked during those rainy days while you are inside.

It shouldn't but, if you want to be paranoid, just pop out the door key and put that into your pocket before putting the fob in the car.

I haven't tried it, but the car should automatically relock if no doors have been opened (you have to enable it in the iDrive settings, though).

I have never had a car be able to lock with a smart key inside the car. It also detects if you have left the key in the trunk and will re-open it instantly until you remove the key from the trunk. Only time I feel it wouldn't work right is if the battery is very low and it's not being detected. I always throw the key on the seat and am not worried about keys locking. inside.
