2019 X3 Seats - awful

I was ready to buy a 2019 X3 today - love everythng about it but the seats!

I was shocked how uncomfortable the "sport seats" are. I am overweight, but the side blosters felt awful. They literally are pushing in on me the entire time I took the test drive.

Any other seat options? I searched on forum and saw the ventlated seats have more room?

Thanks

I am not overweight and fit perfectly in every X-model sport seat and the bolsters are excellent. You will probably be better suited for the standard seats.

Sounds like you didn't adjust the side bolsters correctly. I am far more over weight than I would like to admit, but I didn't even have to set the bolsters to their widest setting to get very comfortable. In my experience the ventilated seats are less comfortable than a properly adjusted sport seat.

Sold my X3 M40 last weekend because of the seats. Love the comfort of our new Lexus, but I really miss the quick acceleration, handling and brakes. Hope to have another fast BMW again.

....two weekends ago I drove 20 hours round trip in my X3, and I got out of the car feeling like I had driven 20 minutes. No pains or aches, not even tired feeling. Best seats I've ever had......

What kind of seats do you have in your Benz? Mercedes and BMW seats are quite different. My wife’s X3 Vernasca sport seats are great. Neither of us are overweight.

My GLE seats are comfortable, but completely different than the BMW, the M-B seats being much flatter and having less bolstering. I have the standard GLE seats with MB-Tex.

i'm about average size and sold both my G01 and G02 due to seat comfort. The best way I can describe is not enough padding near kidney areas. If you evaluate further in that area you can feel the internal mechanism to adjust the side bolster. I was quite disappointed during my long drive home from PCD to MI - almost within 1-2h I felt a sharp pain in my kidney area. You can imagine how uncomfortable I was approaching the end of my journey after 11h continuous. I really really want to love the G01 / G02 as it checks all of the boxes but i'm not going to drive an uncomfortable vehicle. Obviously the same seats are used in the G20 but hoping the lower seating position will allow for better weight transfer/support. I recall from the plant tour over a year ago that the seat manufacturer is LEAR.

BTW - I can confirm that BMW is quite aware of the seat comfort issues with the G01/G02.

More comfortable seat that I've found is the F80 standard and ZCP.

There are two types of seats:
  • Ventilated sears (an option). These have relatively small, fixed-position bolsters.

  • Standard seats. On these, the bolsters are larger and adjustable (side-to-side). If these seats are still uncomfortable even after widening the bolsters as much as they'll go, try the ventilated seats.

If you are tall, big or overweight then cars like the S-Class, 7-Series or X5/5-Series with comfort seats are significantly superior to cheaper cars.

This rules out the majority of cars for s friend of mine who is big. However he commended the seats in the Lexus GS.

For everyone else the seats in the G01 are s big step up from the F25 in comfort and support.

I don't have any hard facts on seat size comparison between X3 and X5, but as a general rule of thumb, bigger cars come with bigger seats.

The seats in my X3 are in the same category as those in my RAV4, also a compact SUV. Neither of them can be as comfortable as the captain style seats in my Sienna Minivan. I don't find either the X3 or the RAV4 uncomfortable, but I did not expect Lazy Boy comfy when I bought the cars either.

Lots of disagreement about the seats, multiple threads and opinions. I took delivery in Spartanburg and drove back to Wa state-driving up to 700 mis. per day. I was concerned about the seats after reading the negative posts and I have a number of back issues. Both me and my wife found the seats comfortable, however. I wonder if this controversy happens with all auto seats regardless of brand. Not sure how to resolve this because apparently you need to own the car long to see how the seats work for your own body.

Unfortunately, it's no different than buying mattress or sofa. You don't get to test sleep in those for a full 8 hours before buying.

Every individual is different and has different ergonomic need. For example, I read in this forum that someone would say the X3 seats were inferior to Audi's SQ5, yet at least one current owner of both vehicles would say the X3 seats are comparably comfortable vs Audi's!

On the other hand, I would also guess that some of the disagreement might have come from expectation. For example, if you are used to seats from a full size American pick up truck, a minivan or even a mid size SUV, then of course the seats in our X3 will feel cramped in comparison. Just because we paid more $ for a luxury brand doesn't mean the manufacturers can fit bigger seats in a compact SUV.

I have the ventilated seats and am quite happy with them. They are not aggressively bolstered but have proven very comfortable to me and my spouse on several 8 hour trips plus I regularly make a two hour trip to our cabin in the mountains. I had an x3 loaner with the sport seats for about two weeks and found them hard to get comfortable in. They felt supportive the first 10 minutes but then I was constantly re-positioning myself and the seats looking for the sweet spot. So for me, the ventilated seats are the way to go. They aren't as comfy and supportive as the ones in our 2 series but they are better than the sport seats.

This was a topic on the Tahoe forums when I had mine prior to the X3. Some people had some major comfort issues with those seats as well. I never experienced any issues.

I think just like anything else subjective, some will be fine and others will have comfort issues. Lots of different body types out there and lots of people with prior injuries that will make being in certain seats uncomfortable.
