30d - Does it have ASD/a symposer?
It's very possible that old age has affected my hearing or I've developed some sort of later in life passion for the sound of diesels, become some sort of 'derv perv'; but the variant of the B57 in the 30d does seem to make quite a nice noise in the cabin.
It's no B58, with all the fun stuff that comes with that, but I can't fathom how it's just normal diesel sounds, even if it is a straight 6. In the N57 I believe it was only the 35d(s) that got the Active Sound Design, not the 30d(s). Which would align with it just being in the M40d now. But I've seen a couple of reviewers that have commented on the cooking version of the B57 possibly sounding 'enhanced' in: The G31 530d (8m39s - Ok he also says the 30i has a 3 litre engine, so might not be a stand up testimony ) The G05 X5 30d (16m03s) I checked my VIN on Real OEM and found that it pulls up an ASD unit. That unit also seems to be in or available for other non-M40i & M40d versions. However, when I've had a look behind my Harman Kardon amp in the boot (haven't screwed anything off, just literally looked behind it), there doesn't seem to be an ASD unit as per the pics in the M40i disable ASD thread. There is a great big space up there as well, which suggests it was designed to hold something. I know nogren couldn't find the appropriate ECU when he was looking to code it on his. And MechX3M40i has already said it's probably not there. Could it be: - The ASD is placed elsewhere? - The sound is produced (artificially) in a different way? - Or does a straight 6 diesel simply sound more pleasant than expected? I wasn't planning to turn it off or switch it over to a Rolls Royce V12, just really curious. Anyone know?

Impressive that you've gone great length trying to get to the bottom of it.
I doubt that the ASD unit will be put on anywhere else but behind the HK amp, as indicated by others who had played with it, as well as the realOEM location diagram. Since you see there is a big void behind the HK amp, then the ASD unit is missing... Others had also found an alternative way to cut off ASD if HK is optioned - by pulling fuse 218. Check if you have that fuse in your car. if yes, experiment the audio quality inside your cabin with and without the fuse. If there is no fuse, or if the car sounds the same either way, then ASD is probably not there. |

Note that the realoem shows the possibility, but only if the vehicle was ordered with a Salapa option I am pretty sure none of us got. Double check in your favorite vin decoder, like mdecoder, for your actual list of salapa options.
Or if that is what you have pasted above, I am wrong. :-) I see you went in to TX76 version of G01. I have got TC75. Don't know the difference. It's in the VIN..

On vin decoding nothing pops up. I dropped my old M135i one into the same decoder and nothing popped up for it either though - and pretty sure it was fitted with it as there were loads of threads on babybmw on how to disable it. Do you know what code I'd be looking out for?

I used to own a E70 with a N57 and I thought that sounded great, no way it sounded what I expected a diesel to sound like under load, only time you really knew it was a diesel was if standing outside with engine idling, I can imagine the B57 will only be better

This is all points to a diesel engine actually sounding alright. There's definitely a hint of Massey Ferguson when standing outside at idle though, so no change from the N57 on that!

Hi,
If you have the HK sound system - you could also look on the main fuse box to see if it is fitted with Fuse 218. As this fuse is only wired with the ASD system - then BMW are unlikely to populate it in a fuse box if no ASD is fitted. If no fuse - then no ASD. If there is a fuse - try taking it out to see if you notice a difference in the sound. Whilst not definitive - I believe the above approach would give you a pretty good idea whether your car has ASD fitted! Cheers Steve |

I used to have a N57 30d as well, and there is a slight improvement from inside the car I would say, but it's a heavier car, and more sound insulation.
But I did notice in a F15 40d, that it sounded like it was under more load than my N57 30d, which of course was true due to the F31 being lighter. But similar to the G01 30d. Anyhow, I am pretty sure mine does not have ASD, and it sounds more than ok under load. And no difference really with Sport mode.

Well... I might check for the 218 fuse mentioned above. By the way - I saw you'd mentioned the TX code differences on another post. Did you get to the bottom of the differences. I've just asked the question on another thread, but I was assuming I had a TX76 because of the panoramic roof. Do you have one on your TX75? EDIT: It looks like the 75/76 difference is LHD v RHD

According to RealOEM, the X3 G01 20iX has the ASD module...
But reading on different posts, it seems only the M40 versions have (active) ASD.. Can someone elaborate or confirm? Main question: Does my (soon to be delivered) X3 G01 20i - Europe have an ASD module, which is active. Harman Kardon option; Check
