M40i Serious Issue - Very Loud Grinding & Vibration

Has anyone ever come across anything like this

It’s happened about 4 times now.

No doubt it’ll be one of those “could not replicate” issue.

Luckily I grabbed a video this time.

I had something kinda similar when i was approaching a stop sign coming downhill - was travelling very slowly and just before the car came to a stop it started to shudder and vibrate. Felt like the ABS was going ballistic.

Were you moving at all when this happened?

No at a complete standstill.

This was the worse so far.

The car was Vibrating that much but it was making the steering wheel violently shake.

Every occasion so far has been when coming to a stop and being stationary

Jesus - it's so bad it set Siri off? I'd get that video to the dealer and get them to sort it.

Looks like the car was possessed

Initial quick thought - if the car was stationary, the movement of the steering wheel must be triggered by the motor on the steering. Maybe it was shorted, or maybe the motor was ok but the computer controlling it was faulty... :

I`ll let the tech guys look at it.

Though I can already here the infamous "not able to replicate".

Without sounding like a wet wipe, I hope its safe.

Time will tell I guess.

Wow. Ain't seen that before. No idea. I guess would say your electronic power steering is wack. That would be very serious and comprise safety.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi,
Cars with auto stop start tend to have special combined alternators/starters.
Could this unit be faulty on your car and the starter is operating whilst the engine is already on?
Cheers

Hi, sorry your having problems with your 40i, the vid sounds like my pressure washer when I forget to turn on the water or in your case a pump running dry or sucking air. Do you have any fault codes?

Update - well sort of.

It’s being passed to their PUMA team - they basically are not sure what’s wrong it, they think it “may” be the steering motor.

I cannot see this being a quick fix.

I suppose you can fix what you do know is broken.

Whilst greatful or a loaner, it’s a 3-series and we had a family trip booked in the car and I’m not sure we’re gojng to get our kit in. Hire company are not able to find anything bigger which is a shame.

Good luck! Look at the bright side, now you can put all the family trip mileage on the loaner instead of your own car!

Keep us posted!

Best of luck.
The G01 X3 has had more than its fair share of problems. Pretty disappointing.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Automatic Lane departure?

Granted...you were not moving. But, the sensor(s) may have gone wonky.

In theory, if it is electronic steering, it may be fairly easy fix. Electronic systems are much less involved than the older hydraulic units (and much less mess).

Exact same thing happened to my car.

It's a software bug with the traction control system when going downhill at low speed.

Dealer fixed it by doing a software update on the car.

Any more details on this? Like a TIS number or anything?

Same thing just happened to me on the way home.

I was in heavy traffic stopped on an downward incline. Cars in front in back of me were close. All of a sudden the car starting making a loud vibrating sound. The steering wheel didn't move, though. It sounded like when ABS is fully engaged, except that it kept doing it.

I made it stop by putting the car into park and the let go of the brake.

One thing was that the car was filthy with salt from yesterday's storm and the parking warning crap was going off constantly yesterday when the car had snow on it.

Have to say when it did this it was quite startling.
