Any interest in N20 class-action lawsuit for timing chain guide failure?

Several owners of the X3 with the N20 engine have reported timing chain guide failures which resulted in catastrophic engine damage. Some owners have mentioned a willingness to participate in a class-action lawsuit related to a defective timing chain guide design.

BMW recently offered to settle two class-action lawsuits related to water damage to the electrical system in certain E60 5 series. Those interested in pursuing a class action for the N20 engine may want to be proactive and contact one or more of the law firms involved in the successful 5 series class action to see if any of these firms are prepared to initiate a N20 timing chain failure class-action lawsuit.

Wife's X3 just came back from dealership to resolve noisy timing chain issue.
Car was out of warranty with 98k miles and more or less sounded the same from day 1 so I never thought anything of it.

My SA requested proof of oil changes from 50k-present and was able to provide me with 30% goodwill discount on job.

Timing Chain, guides, oil pump chain module were changed per recent SIB 11 03 17.

Upon QC the Tech had some faults come on and they ended up finding that timing jump had occurred. Found some teeth missing on crankshaft sprocket and a cracked valve cover. Replaced all above NC. Buttoned up and running well.

How many cases of this has there been related to the N20 on Bimmerpost? Does it happen at a higher rate on the X3 with the N20 vs a 3 series?

Is it generally understood a 2013 with a N20 out of warranty is a ticking time bomb?

My X3 is the 35i model, so I am not a potential plaintiff in any N20 class action lawsuit. I suspect one of the law firms that have filed past class action lawsuits against BMW would be willing to file on a contingent fee basis a suit on behalf of owners of the X3 28i or other models with the N20 engine for defects in the timing chain system. However, one or more owners of BMWs with the N20 engine need to step forward as a lead plaintiff for such a class action, if interested.

If someone is interested in exploring a possible class action, you might send a letter along the following lines to one or more law firms, such as the ones identified in the original post:

"I am the owner of a 201_ BMW [X3 or other model] with a 2 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine (referred to as the N20 engine). BMW introduced the N20 engine in the U.S. X3 and other models beginning in the 2012 model year.
A number of owners of BMWs with the N20 engine have reported a failure of the timing chain guide. Many of the failures have not occurred until the vehicle was out of warranty. This failure frequently results in catastrophic damage to the engine, which requires costly repair or replacement of the N20 engine. Such problems are illustrated in the following internet threads:

On or about January 2015 BMW introduced a new timing chain guide part for the N20 engine. It is suspected this was done to address the known defect in the original timing chain guide, but it is not known if the new part solved the problem. BMW has not issued a recall to replace the defective timing chain guides nor routinely authorized dealers to proactively inspect and replace the defective guides or repair the resulting damaged engines outside of warranty coverage.

BMW NA settled a class action pertaining to defective timing chains in certain MINI models as described at the link above. As a result of the settlement, claimants were eligible for a reimbursement payment and all potential plaintiffs not opting out of the suit received a warranty extension.

"Case Summary

The lawsuit claimed that BMW made and sold certain MINI Coopers knowing that the cars had defective timing chain components, which are parts inside the engine. Defendants deny they did anything wrong and stand behind and support their products. The Court did not decide in favor of Plaintiffs or Defendants. Instead, both sides agreed to a settlement. That way, they avoid the cost and risk of a trial, so that the people affected will get benefits. The Class Representatives and the attorneys think the settlement is best for everyone."

Issues with 2013 BMW X3

After 2 years of coming in with Drive train malfunction issues and 5 visits later I was now over warranty and the dealer which I purchased my certified pre-owned X3 informed me that my car needed a new High Pressure fuel pump. They told me it would cost $1900 to fix and I told them I am not paying it because this is not my first visit with the same issue. They told me I could escalate to BMW corporate and so I did just that. Corporate opened up a case for me and told me to give them about a week to escalate this issue. Two days later I received a call from the service manager at the dealer and he asked me to explain what was happening to my car to him. I went over the many times I visited the center and that the first time I had drive train issues the car stopped several times on the road with me and now 5 visits later its doing the same thing. He informed me that he did not think it was a fuel pump issue but if I would give my approval to have one of his technicians drive my car home for the night to see if it will give him the stalling issue. I said sure. A few days later my service guy calls me and says good news its not the fuel pump that needs replacement its the following: New Charger assembly, Timing Chain and oil pump drive along with Fuel Inject ORS. He said that BMW Corporate has agreed to cover 50% of the cost to fix my car. He said the total invoice is about $7900 and I am responsible for $3950. He then said if I don't fix the car BMW corporate has agreed to give me a $3000 credit towards a new BMW purchase. I was angry, distraught and truly unhappy that there were so m any things wrong with a car I've only owned for about 3 years. So I took my car and paid the $151.55 to have it diagnosed and started doing my research on this car. It turns out there are many reports and complaints regarding the X3 engine faulting and fuel injector issues. I am ready to file a lawsuit because its just so ironic that the minute I pass the warranty period I am being hit with these high service issues.

Please register a complaint on NHTSA website for Timing-Chain issue

I called NHTSA today and so far they only have a couple of complaints pertaining to the timing-chain problem. There are 68 other complaints related to power-braking and an investigation is launched for only that.

This timing-chain is a universal problem and I seriously insist that a complaint be filed so an investigation can begin.

Can you take a moment and go to www.nhtsa.gov and write up a complaint of when your issue occurred and what you have done about it.

It takes less than 5 minutes and is very very straight forward - enter VIN number (it is available online on your insurance declaration page), select "Engine & Powertrain" as the affected components and type in the incident.

Also contact KKG Law office and talk to the paralegal about your issue.

It happened last year August at 146k km .. around 90k miles.. I had to replace engine at 80/20 deal meaning 20 percent I had to pay which I was around 5000 Canadian dollars.. kind of trapped situation so I agreed .. yes truly it's known manufaturering defect but they hid it

That’s bad... we have one in the family, 2015 with 88,000Km.... never used eco pro....

Warranty till Sep 21....I’m hoping it blows but don’t think it will have sufficient km to detonate while covered... Getting the crap parts done after warranty if my son keeps it...

Speaking of golf cart mode (stop/start) on the G01... absolutely hate that you have to turn it off each time.... On delivery asked the Genius if it can be disabled... his answer was no...
